Pinpoint Test E : IWE Solenoid - Electrical Fault

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
The IWE solenoid receives power from the BJB. In 2H, the TCCM will ground the IWE solenoid to allow vacuum to pass through the solenoid and to the IWE. The TCCM IWE solenoid driver monitors the IWE ground circuit for open circuit, short to power, and short to ground. If an electrical fault is detected, the TCCM will store a DTC.
DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition TCCM C1979:11 IWE Solenoid Circuit Failure: Circuit Short To Ground This DTC sets when the TCCM detects a short to ground in the IWE solenoid circuit. The fault results in IWE disengaged all the time. TCCM C1979:12 IWE Solenoid Circuit Failure: Circuit Short To Battery This DTC sets when the TCCM detects a short to voltage in the IWE solenoid circuit. The fault results in IWE engaged all the time. TCCM C1979:13 IWE Solenoid Circuit Failure: Circuit Open This DTC sets when the TCCM detects an open circuit in the IWE solenoid circuit. The fault results in IWE engaged all the time. Possible Sources
- IWE control circuit shorted to voltage
- IWE control circuit shorted to ground
- IWE control open circuit
- IWE solenoid
- IWE solenoid power open circuit
- IWE solenoid power circuit short to ground
- TCCM
- E1 CHECK THE IWE SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect IWE C1291.
- Disconnect TCCM C2371A.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C1291-2 Ground
Is any voltage present?
Yes REPAIR the short to power No GO to E2 - E2 CHECK THE IWE SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Ignition OFF.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C1291-2 Ground
Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
Yes GO to E4 No REPAIR the short to ground. - E3 CHECK THE IWE SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect IWE solenoid C1291.
- Disconnect TCCM C2371A.
- Ignition ON.
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to E4 No REPAIR the open circuit. - E4 CHECK THE IWE SOLENOID RESISTANCENOTE: If the temperatures (either ambient or in the engine compartment) are exceptionally high, a higher than normal resistance reading could result. A lower temperature could result in a lower resistance reading.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
Pin 1, component side.
Pin 2, component side.
Is the resistance between 44 and 70 ohms?
Yes GO to E5 No INSTALL a new IWE solenoid. - Measure:
- E5 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE IWE SOLENOID
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect IWE solenoid C1291.
- Connect TCCM C2371A.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C1291-1 Ground
Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes GO to E6 No CHECK BJB fuse. If OK, REPAIR the open circuit. If not OK, REPAIR the short to ground. INSTALL a new fuse. - E6 CHECK FOR CORRECT TCCM OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect and inspect TCCM connectors.
- Disconnect and inspect IWE solenoid connector.
- Check for the following:
- corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
- Connect all TCCM and IWE solenoid connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes INSTALL a new TCCM. REFER to: Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) . No The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of the connector or pin issues.
