Pinpoint Test E : The Steering Wheel Switch(Es) Illumination Is Inoperative Or Always On

  1. Cluster and Panel Illumination for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    REFER to: Instrument Panel and Interior Switches Illumination - System Operation and Component Description .

    Possible Sources 

    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
    • Steering wheel switch
    • Clockspring
    • Steering wheel
    • Driver airbag

  2. E1 CHECK IF ALL THE STEERING WHEEL ILLUMINATED SWITCHES ARE INOPERATIVE

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.

    • Press and hold the instrument panel dimmer up switch until the dimmable illumination is at full intensity.

    • Check the operation of the dimmable steering wheel switches.

    Is any steering wheel switch illuminated? 

    Yes  GO to  E6
    No  GO to  E2
  3. E2 CHECK THE HORN OPERATION

    • Check the operation of the traffic horn.

    Does the traffic horn operate? 

    Yes  GO to  E3
    No  REFER to: Horn .
  4. E3 CHECK FOR ILLUMINATION VOLTAGE SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.

    • Disconnect Clockspring C218A.

    • Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.

    • Press and hold the instrument panel dimmer up switch until the dimmable illumination is at full intensity.

    • Measure:

      Vehicles Not Equipped With Adaptive Steering 

      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      Refer to C218A-9

      Ground

      Vehicles Equipped With Adaptive Steering 

      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      Refer to C218A-4

      Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  For vehicles not equipped with adaptive steering, GO to  E4 For vehicles Equipped with adaptive steering, GO to  E5
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  5. E4 CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING (VEHICLES NOT EQUIPPED WITH ADAPTIVE STEERING)

    • Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.

    • Connect Clockspring C218A.

    • Disconnect Clockspring C218B.

    • Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      Clockspring C218B, pin 11, component side

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new steering wheel. REFER to: Steering Wheel .
    No  INSTALL a new clockspring. REFER to: Clockspring .
  6. E5 CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING (VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ADAPTIVE STEERING)

    • Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.

    • Connect Clockspring C218A.

    • Disconnect Clockspring C218B.

    • Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      Clockspring C218E, pin 3, component side

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new steering wheel. REFER to: Steering Wheel - Vehicles With: Adaptive Steering .
    No  INSTALL a new clockspring. REFER to: Clockspring - Vehicles With: Adaptive Steering .
  7. E6 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE SUSPECT STEERING WHEEL SWITCH

    • Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.

    • Disconnect the suspect steering wheel switch.

    • Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.

    • Measure:

      Left Upper Steering Control Switch 

      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Right Upper Steering Control Switch

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new steering wheel switch in question. REFER to: Steering Wheel Multifunction Switch .
    No  INSTALL a new steering wheel. REFER to: Steering Wheel . or REFER to: Steering Wheel - Vehicles With: Adaptive Steering .
