Pinpoint Test H: The Heated Windshield System Is Inoperative

  1. Refer to Heated Window for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    REFER to: Glass, Frames and Mechanisms - Vehicles With: One-Touch Open and Close Front Windows - System Operation and Component Description .

    Possible Sources 

    • Fuse
    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
    • Heated windshield grid
    • BJB
    • HVAC module

    Visual Inspection and Pre-checks 

    • Verify BJB fuse 52 (40A) and 82 (40A) are OK.

  2. H1 CHECK FOR BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform BCM self-test.

    Are any BCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) present? 

    Yes  REFER to the BCM DTC CHART .
    No  GO to  H2
  3. H2 CHECK THE HEATED WINDSHIELD SWITCH PID (PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION)

    • Start the engine.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, view HVAC module PIDs (Parameter Identifications).

    • Monitor the heated windshield switch PID while pressing and releasing the heated windshield switch.

    Does the PID agree with the heated windshield switch status? 

    Yes  GO to  H3
    No  GO to  H6
  4. H3 CHECK THE HEATED WINDSHIELD GRID VOLTAGES

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect: Heated Windshield Element C1531A (LH) and C1532A (RH).

    • Start the engine.

    • Activate the heated windshield switch.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    • Measure:

      Ground

    Are the voltages greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  GO to  H4
    No  If both voltage measurements failed, GO to  H7If only the LH heated windshield element voltage measurement failed, VERIFY the BJB fuse 82 (40A) is OK. If OK, GO to  H5 If not OK, REFER to the OEM ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM INTRODUCTION to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. If only the RH heated windshield element voltage measurement failed, VERIFY the BJB fuse 52 (40A) is OK. If OK, GO to  H5 If not OK, REFER to the OEM ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM INTRODUCTION to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
  5. H4 CHECK THE HEATED WINDSHIELD GRID GROUNDS

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect: Heated Windshield Element C1531B (LH) and C1532B (RH).

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new windshield.
    No  REPAIR the circuit in question.
  6. H5 CHECK THE HEATED WINDSHIELD OUTPUT CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect: BJB C1035A and C1035B.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    • Measure:

    Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  H7
    No  REPAIR the circuit in question.
  7. H6 CHECK FOR CORRECT HVAC (HEATING, VENTILATION AND AIR CONDITIONING) MODULE OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect all the HVAC module connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins as necessary
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the HVAC module connectors and all previously disconnected rear window defrost system connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new HVAC module. Refer to the appropriate Climate Control System article for the procedure.
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by poor connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  8. H7 CHECK FOR CORRECT BJB (BATTERY JUNCTION BOX) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect all the BJB connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins as necessary
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the BJB connectors and all previously disconnected heated windshield system connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new BJB.
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by poor connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
