Pinpoint Test Y: The Low Engine Oil Pressure Warning Indicator Is Never Or Always On (3.5L GTDI)
- Refer to Wiring Diagrams INSTRUMENT CLUSTER
for schematic and connector information.
Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
See Low Engine Oil Pressure Warning Indicator. REFER to: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) - System Operation and Component Description .
If the engine oil pressure warning indicator request message is missing less than 5 seconds, the IPC defaults the low engine oil pressure warning indicator to the last state (on or off), based upon the last message received.
If the engine oil pressure warning indicator request message is missing for 5 seconds or longer, the IPC defaults the low engine oil pressure warning indicator on.
DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition PCM P0521:00 Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch "A" Circuit Range/Performance: No Sub Type Information Sets in the PCM when the PCM detects signal variation outside of the module parameters on the hardwired input from the engine oil pressure switch. PCM P0522:00 Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch "A" Circuit Low: No Sub Type Information Sets in the PCM when the PCM detects a short to ground on the hardwired input from the engine oil pressure switch. PCM P0523:00 Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch "A" Circuit High: No Sub Type Information Sets in the PCM when the PCM detects and open on the hardwired input from the engine oil pressure switch. PCM P0524:00 Engine Oil Pressure Too Low: No Sub Type Information Sets in the PCM when the PCM detects low engine oil pressure. Possible Sources
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Engine oil pressure switch
- Engine oil pressure concern
- GWM concern
- PCM
- IPC
Visual Inspection and Pre-checks
- Check the engine oil level
- Inspect the engine for noise or other symptom that indicates a low engine oil pressure concern.
- Inspect the engine oil pressure switch for signs of external damage.
- Inspect the engine oil pressure switch connector for signs of corrosion and inspect the harness for damage indicating a cut, open or circuit shorted to ground.
- NOTE: If equipped with stop-start, while the vehicle is at a stop and the engine shuts off, the engine oil pressure gauge drops to 0 and the low engine oil pressure warning indicator turns off.
- Y1 CARRY OUT THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING A DIAGNOSTIC SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, view the IPC Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
- Select the IPC low oil pressure warning indicator (OIL_P_LOW) PID.
- Access the IPC and control the OIL_P_LOWPID
- Command the low engine oil pressure warning indicator on then off while observing the low engine oil pressure warning indicator.
Does the low engine oil pressure warning indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?
Yes GO to Y2 No Install a new IPC. Refer to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . - Y2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) SELF-TEST
- Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform a IPC self-test.
Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded?
Yes REFER to DTC Chart: IPC in Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart . No If the low engine oil pressure warning indicator is never on, GO to Y3 If the low engine oil pressure warning indicator is always on, GO to Y6 - Y3 CHECK FOR A STUCK CLOSED ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect Engine Oil Pressure Switch C103 (3.5L GTDI).
- Ignition ON.
