Symptom Chart

Diagnostics in this article assume a certain skill level and knowledge of Ford-specific diagnostic practices. REFER to: Diagnostic Methods .

In most circumstances, the PCM sets a DTC to help guide diagnostics. Refer to the DTC Chart before using the Symptom Chart. The Symptom column lists the vehicle condition. The Possible Sources column lists a detailed vehicle condition. The Action column lists the action to be performed to determine the cause of the condition. Each action lists the components that can cause the symptom and the individual components in that system.

Depress the brake pedal and observe the brake lights. If the brake lights do not illuminate, REFER to: Stoplamps .
GO to Pinpoint Test C 
Brake transmission shift interlock override does not release correctly Circuitry open/shorted
Brake shift interlock override switch
GSM
GO to Pinpoint Test A 
Transmission stuck in park position Mechanical obstruction in the path of the TRCM output arm.
Selector lever cable improperly adjusted
TRCM electrical integrity
Mechanical obstruction in the path of the TRCM output arm. INSPECT for debris.
Shift cable alignment or adjustment. REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 1.5L EcoBoost (118kW/160PS) - I4 . REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 2.0L EcoBoost (184kW/250PS) - MI4 . REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 2.5L Duratec (125kW/170PS) .
GO to Pinpoint Test E 
Transmission returns to park automatically The criteria for the return to park feature was met
Driver door ajar switch, circuits, BCM or GSM
Check the system for normal operation. REFER to: External Controls - System Operation and Component Description .
Open then close the drivers door and cycle the door locks. If the door ajar icon is illuminated on the IPC or if the door locks are not working correctly, REFER to: Locks, Latches and Entry Systems . If the door ajar and locks are working correctly, GO to Pinpoint Test D 
Transmission does not return to park when the door is opened Driver door ajar switch, circuits, BCM or GSM GO to Pinpoint Test D 
No park range Selector lever cable out of adjustment INSPECT the selector lever cable for correct alignment/adjustment. REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 1.5L EcoBoost (118kW/160PS) - I4 . REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 2.0L EcoBoost (184kW/250PS) - MI4 . REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 2.5L Duratec (125kW/170PS) .
Selector lever cable improperly routed
Mechanical obstruction in path of TRCM output arm
INSPECT the selector lever cable for correct routing. REFER to: Selector Lever Cable - 1.5L EcoBoost (118kW/160PS) - I4 .
INSPECT for mud or ice obstructing the TRCM output arm.
Transmission stuck in drive GSM or TRCM CHECK for DTCs related to the GSM and TRCM.
Selector lever is out of correct gear relationship Selector lever cable out of adjustment REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 1.5L EcoBoost (118kW/160PS) - I4 . REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 2.0L EcoBoost (184kW/250PS) - MI4 . REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 2.5L Duratec (125kW/170PS) .
Mechanical obstruction in path of TRCM output arm INSPECT the selector lever cable for correct routing. REFER to: Selector Lever Cable - 1.5L EcoBoost (118kW/160PS) - I4 . REFER to: Selector Lever Cable - 2.0L EcoBoost (184kW/250PS) - MI4 . REFER to: Selector Lever Cable - 2.5L Duratec (125kW/170PS) .
INSPECT for mud or ice obstructing the TRCM output arm.
Loose selector lever cable bracket CHECK the selector lever cable bracket. TIGHTEN as necessary.
Selector lever cable binding Selector lever cable out of adjustment INSPECT the selector lever cable for correct alignment/adjustment. REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 1.5L EcoBoost (118kW/160PS) - I4 . REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 2.0L EcoBoost (184kW/250PS) - MI4 . REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 2.5L Duratec (125kW/170PS) .
Internal transmission components damaged CHECK the manual control lever and internal transmission components for damage. REFER to: Transmission .
The grade assist switch is inoperative or does not operate correctly Wiring, terminals or connectors
