Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
The TRCM, GSM and the PCM communicate on the HS-CAN but use a redundant PWM hard wired system as a backup. If the HS-CAN system fails the TRCM, GSM and PCM communicate via this hard wired system. The GSM sends a PWM signal to the PCM when the CAN system is down so the PCM knows what range the operator has selected. The PWM operates at 2 frequencies, 190 Hz and 230 Hz and outputs 8 duty cycles.
DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition PCM P085D:00 Gear Shift Control Module "A" Performance: No Sub Type Information The PCM detects a frequency signal less than 170 Hz or greater than 250 Hz. TRCM P0860:00 Gear Shift Control Module "A" Communication Circuit: No Sub Type Information The TRCM or the PCM detects a PWM signal out of range. TRCM P0861:00 Gear Shift Control Module "A" Communication Circuit Low: No Sub Type Information The TRCM or the PCM detects a duty cycle less than 10%. TRCM P0862:00 Gear Shift Control Module "A" Communication Circuit High: No Sub Type Information The TRCM or the PCM detects a duty cycle greater than 90%. Possible Sources
- Connectors damaged or pushed-out terminals, circuitry open, shorted to power or shorted to ground
- BCM fuse 12 (7.5A)
- GSM
- G1 RETRIEVE AND RECORD MODULE DTCS
- Using the diagnostic scan tool, retrieve DTCs from the PCM and TRCM.
Are DTCs P085D, P0860, P0861 and/or P0862 present?
Yes If the TRCM is the reporting module, GO to G2 If the PCM is the reporting module, GO to G5 No The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition on the HS-CAN. - G2 CHECK THE PWM (PULSE WIDTH MODULATION) 1 CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect GSM C3532.
- Disconnect TRCM C1693.
- Inspect the connectors for damaged or pushed-out terminals.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C3532-11 Ground
Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
Yes GO to G3 No REPAIR the circuit. - G3 CHECK THE PWM (PULSE WIDTH MODULATION) 1 CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to G4 No REPAIR the circuit. - G4 CHECK THE PWM (PULSE WIDTH MODULATION) 1 CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO POWER
- Ignition ON.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C1693-7 Ground
Is any voltage present?
Yes REPAIR the circuit. No INSTALL a new GSM. REFER to: Gear Shift Module (GSM) . - G5 CHECK THE PWM (PULSE WIDTH MODULATION) 2 CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect GSM C3532.
- Disconnect PCM Connector as equipped below.
- Inspect the connectors for damaged or pushed-out terminals.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C3532-10 Ground
Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
Yes GO to G6 No REPAIR the circuit. - G6 CHECK THE PWM (PULSE WIDTH MODULATION) 2 CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Measure:
For vehicles equipped with the 1.5L

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to G7 No REPAIR the circuit. - Measure:
- G7 CHECK THE PWM (PULSE WIDTH MODULATION) 2 CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO POWER
- Ignition ON.
- Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead C3532-10 Ground
Is any voltage present?
Yes REPAIR the circuit. No INSTALL a new GSM. REFER to: Gear Shift Module (GSM) .
