Pinpoint Test AJ : The PRNDL Indicator Is Never On Or Never Displays P Or The SELECTSHIFT® Display Does Not Display The Selected Range

  1. Refer to Instrument Cluster for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

If the transmission gear display mode, transmission gear display, or transmission gear lever position message is missing from the BCM for less than the programmed time, the PRNDL display remains in the last indication mode.

If the transmission gear display mode, transmission gear display, or transmission gear lever position message is missing from the TCM (diesel) or PCM (gasoline) for longer than the programmed time, the BCM sets DTC U0100:00 or U0101:00.

If the IPC does not receive the transmission gear display mode, transmission gear display, or transmission gear lever position message from the BCM for longer than the programmed time, the IPC sets DTC U100:00 or U0101:00 and defaults the PRNDL display off.

See PRNDL Indicator. REFER to: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) - System Operation and Component Description .

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
IPC P1706:00 High Vehicle Speed Observed in Park: No Sub Type Information A continuous and on-demand DTC that sets in the IPC if the IPC detects a park detect input with vehicle speed over 16 km/h (10 mph) for more than 5 seconds, indicating that the vehicle is in park while in motion.

    Possible Sources

    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
    • Transmission concern
    • BCM concern
    • TCM concern
    • PCM concern
    • Park position detect switch
    • IPC

  2. AJ1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) SELF-TEST

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the IPC self-test.

Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded?

Yes  REFER to DTC Chart: IPC .
    No  GO to  AJ2
  3. AJ2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE BCM (BODY CONTROL MODULE) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the BCM self-test.

Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded?

Yes  REFER to: Body Control Module (BCM) .
    No  GO to  AJ3
  4. AJ3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) KOEO (KEY ON, ENGINE OFF) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the PCM KOEO self-test.

Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded?

Yes  Refer to the appropriate Engine article for the procedure.
    No  GO to  AJ4
  5. AJ4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the TCM self-test.

Are any transmission related Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded?

Yes  Refer to the appropriate Automatic Transmission article for the procedure.
No  For a SelectShift® concern, GO to  AJ5 For other PRNDL concerns, GO to  AJ6
  6. AJ5 CHECK THE SELECTSHIFT® FEATURE OPERATION

    • Operate the SelectShift® feature and confirm the transmission shifts up and down using the SelectShift® switch.

Does the SelectShift® feature operate correctly?

Yes  Refer to IPC Guided Routine Testing .
No  REFER to: External Controls .
  7. AJ6 BYPASS THE SELECTOR LEVER AND CHECK THE PARK DETECT INPUT TO THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER)

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Selector Lever C2810.

    • Connect:
      Lead 1 Measurement / Action Lead 2
      C2810-10
      GFD311133Courtesy of FORD MOTOR COMPANY
      Ground

    • Ignition ON.

    • Monitor the PRNDL indicator with the jumper wire installed and with the jumper wire removed.

Does the PRNDL display P with the jumper wire removed and blank with the jumper wire connected?

Yes  REMOVE the fused jumper wire. INSTALL a new selector lever. REFER to: Selector Lever Assembly .
No  REMOVE the fused jumper wire. GO to  AJ7
  8. AJ7 CHECK THE SELECTOR LEVER INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN BETWEEN THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) AND THE SELECTOR LEVER

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect IPC C220.

    • Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C220-9
      GFD311333Courtesy of FORD MOTOR COMPANY
