Pinpoint Test H : TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) Solenoid

  1. Refer to Transmission Controls - 6F35 for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    The PCM controls torque converter lock-up by varying the amount of current applied to the TCC solenoid. When no current is applied to the TCC solenoid, the TCC is fully released. When maximum current is applied, the TCC is fully applied.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    PCM P0740:00 Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Circuit/Open: No Sub Type Information Open circuit in the TCC solenoid or wiring harness.
    PCM P0742:00 Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Circuit Stuck On: No Sub Type Information Short to ground in the TCC solenoid or wiring harness.
    PCM P0743:00 Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Circuit Electrical: No Sub Type Information Open or short to ground in the TCC solenoid or wiring harness.
    PCM P0744:00 Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Circuit Intermittent: No Sub Type Information Short to power in the TCC solenoid or wiring harness.
    PCM P2760:00 Torque Converter Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid Intermittent: No Sub Type Information Intermittent circuit in the TCC solenoid or wiring harness. Open, short to ground or short to power.

    Possible Sources 

    • Connectors damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals
    • TCC solenoid
    • Transmission internal wiring harness frame
    • PCM

  2. H1 DTCS P0740, P0742, P0743, P0744, P2760

    • Using the diagnostic scan tool, retrieve all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

    Are diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0740, P0742, P0743, P0744 and/or P2760 present? 

    Yes  For diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0740, P0743 and P2760, GO to  H2 For diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0742, P0743 and P2760, GO to  H5 For diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0744, GO to  H7
    No  REFER to: Diagnosis By Symptom .
  3. H2 CHECK THE TCC (TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH) SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Transmission Vehicle Harness C168A.

    • Disconnect PCM C175E.

    • Inspect the connectors for damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  H3
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  4. H3 CHECK THE TCC (TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH) SOLENOID CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      Component side resistance pin 5.

      Component side resistance pin 6.

    Is the resistance between 4.0 and 7.2 ohms? 

    Yes  Refer to PCM Guided Routine Testing .
    No  GO to  H4
  5. H4 CHECK THE TCC (TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH) SOLENOID RESISTANCE

    • Remove the transmission internal wiring harness frame. REFER to: Transmission Internal Wiring Harness Frame . Inspect for metal shavings on the exposed metal contacts or other components and clean the solenoid and transmission internal wiring harness frame terminals.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance between 4.0 and 7.2 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new transmission internal wiring harness frame. REFER to: Transmission Internal Wiring Harness Frame .
    No  INSTALL a new TCC solenoid. REFER to: Solenoid .
  6. H5 CHECK THE TCC (TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH) SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Transmission Vehicle Harness C168A.

    • Disconnect PCM C175E.

    • Inspect the connectors for damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  H6
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  7. H6 CHECK THE TCC (TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH) SOLENOID FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Remove the transmission internal wiring harness frame. REFER to: Transmission Internal Wiring Harness Frame . Inspect for metal shavings on the exposed metal contacts or other components and clean the solenoid and transmission internal wiring harness frame terminals.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      TCC Solenoid pin A.

      Ground

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new TCC solenoid. REFER to: Solenoid .
    No  INSTALL a new transmission internal wiring harness frame. REFER to: Transmission Internal Wiring Harness Frame .
  8. H7 CHECK THE TCC (TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH) SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO POWER

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Transmission Vehicle Harness C168A.

    • Disconnect PCM C175E.

    • Inspect the connectors for damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit.
    No  Refer to PCM Guided Routine Testing .
