Pinpoint Test S : The Engine Over-Temperature Warning Indicator Is Never Or Always On

  1. Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    See Engine Over-Temperature Warning Indicator. REFER to: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) - System Operation and Component Description .

    If the engine coolant temperature data or engine overheat indication request messages are missing or invalid for less than 5 seconds, the IPC defaults the engine over-temperature warning indicator to the last indication state (on or off), based upon on the last message received.

    If the engine coolant temperature data or engine overheat indication request messages are missing or invalid for 5 seconds or longer, the IPC defaults the engine over-temperature warning indicator on.

    Possible Sources 

    • Communication concern
    • GWM concern
    • PCM
    • IPC

  2. S1 PERFORM THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the IPC self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to DTC Chart: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) 
    No  GO to  S2
  3. S2 PERFORM THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the PCM self-test.

    • Check for recorded Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS (1.0L) or refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS (2.0L)
    No  GO to  S3
  4. S3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCS FROM THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) SELF-TEST

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the PCM self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS (1.0L) or refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS (2.0L)
    No  GO to  S4
  5. S4 CHECK THE GWM (GATEWAY MODULE A) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, check the GWM Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes 
    No  GO to  S5
  6. S5 PERFORM THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING A DIAGNOSTIC SCAN TOOL

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, view the IPC Parameter Identifications (PIDs).

    • Select the IPC engine over-temperature warning indicator PID (COOLANT_LMP).

    • Command the engine over temperature warning indicator on then off while observing the engine over temperature warning indicator.

    Does the engine over temperature warning indicator turn on when commanded on and turn off when commanded off? 

    Yes  If the engine over-temperature message center is never on, the system is operating correctly at this time. If the engine over-temperature indicator is always on, Refer to PCM GUIDED ROUTINE TESTING
    No  INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) .
