Pinpoint Test As : The Low Washer Fluid Level Warning Message Is Never Or Always On

  1. Instrument Cluster for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    See Low Washer Fluid Level Warning Message. REFER to: Message Center - System Operation and Component Description .

    Possible Sources 

    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
    • Low washer fluid switch
    • IPC

    Visual Inspection and Pre-checks 

    • Verify the washer fluid reservoir is full and the ignition has been cycled at least once prior to beginning the pinpoint test for an always on condition or the washer fluid is or has been reported low for a never on condition.

  2. AS1 CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER OPERATION

    • Ignition ON.

    • Close all doors, the hood and liftgate.

    • Clear all message center warnings by pressing the OK button for each warning present.

    • Monitor the driver door ajar warning message.

    • Open the driver door.

    • Clear the message center popup warning.

    • Monitor the driver door ajar warning message.

    Is the driver door ajar warning message displayed with the door open and off with the door closed? 

    Yes  If the low washer fluid level warning message is inoperative, GO to  AS2 If the low washer fluid level warning message is always on, GO to  AS5
    No  DIAGNOSE the door ajar warning indicator. GO to Pinpoint Test R 
  3. AS2 CHECK THE LOW WASHER FLUID INDICATOR OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Low Washer Fluid Level Switch C138.

    • Connect:
      Lead 1 Measurement / Action Lead 2

    • Ignition ON.

    • Wait one minute.

    • Observe the low washer fluid level warning message popup.

    Is the low washer fluid level warning message popup displayed? 

    Yes  REMOVE the fused jumper wire. INSTALL a new washer fluid level switch or reservoir as necessary.
    No  REMOVE the fused jumper wire. GO to  AS3
  4. AS3 CHECK THE WASHER FLUID LEVEL SWITCH GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN AT THE WASHER FLUID LEVEL SWITCH

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  AS4
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  5. AS4 CHECK THE WASHER FLUID LEVEL INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Disconnect IPC C220.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  AS7
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  6. AS5 CHECK THE WASHER FLUID INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect Low Washer Fluid Level Switch C138.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Wait one minute.

    • Observe the low washer fluid level RTT indicator.

    Did the low washer fluid level RTT indicator turn off? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new washer fluid level switch or reservoir as necessary.
    No  GO to  AS6
  7. AS6 CHECK THE WASHER FLUID INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect IPC C220.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      Refer to C220-11

      Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  AS7
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  8. AS7 CHECK FOR CORRECT IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect the IPC and all related in-line connectors.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the IPC and all related in-line connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this concern, Refer to IPC GUIDED ROUTINE TESTING
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
