Transmission - 3.5L Duratec (212kW/278PS): Installation

All vehicles 

  1. NOTE: If removed, inspect the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tube backing rings and seals for damage and install new backing rings or seals if necessary.

    1. Install the backing ring (7J324)
    2. Lubricate and install the seal (7D258)

      Material

      : Motorcraft® MERCON® LV Automatic Transmission Fluid / XT-10-QLVC (WSS-M2C938-A) (MERCON® LV,)

  2. Install the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes, the new bolts and the nuts.

    1. Torque

      : 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

    2. Torque

      : 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

  3. NOTE: Make sure that when installing the manual control lever, it is fully seated onto the manual control lever shaft. Damage to the manual control lever shaft will occur and the manual lever will come loose.
    NOTE: Make sure to hold the manual control lever while tightening the manual control lever nut or damage to the manual control lever and park components will occur.

    Install the manual control lever and nut.

    Torque

    : 159 lb.in (18 Nm)

  4. Lubricate the torque converter pilot hub with Multi-Purpose Grease.

    Material

    : Motorcraft® Multi-Purpose Grease Spray / XL-5-A (ESB-M1C93-B)

  5. If the dowel pins were pulled out of the engine block during removal, install new dowel pins in the engine block.

  6. Position the transmission behind the engine and remove the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

  7. Using a transmission jack, support the transmission. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

  8. Position the transmission on the dowel pins and install the lower torque converter housing bolts.

    1. If equipped.

      Torque

      : 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  9. NOTE: Vehicles equipped with active warm up.

    Install the transmission fluid warmer.

    Torque

    : 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

  10. Install the transmission fluid cooler tube.

    1. Install a new bolt.

      Torque

      : 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

    2. Tighten the fitting.

      Torque

      : 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

  11. Install the transmission fluid cooler tube.

    Torque

    : 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

  12. Connect the transmission fluid cooler tubes to the transmission fluid cooler thermal bypass valve.

  13. Install the transmission fluid cooler tube secondary latches.

  14. Install the wiring retainers and connect the transmission electrical connector.

  15. Install new torque converter bolts.

    Torque

    : 41 lb.ft (55 Nm)

  16. Install the inspection cover and fasteners.

  17. Install the transfer case. Refer to: Transfer Case .
  18. Inspect the inboard end of the halfshaft.

  19. NOTE: If the transmission has been replaced or overhauled, the halfshaft seals do not need to be replaced.

    Replace the RH halfshaft seal. Refer to: Halfshaft Seal RH - FWD .

  20. NOTE: Do not fully install the shaft at this time.

    Using part: 4W1W-4N206-A, install the inboard splines of the halfshaft through the halfshaft seal protector and the new halfshaft seal.

  21. Install the halfshaft and the intermediate shaft bearing bracket bolts.

    Torque

    : 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    All vehicles 

  22. Install the roll restrictor bracket and bolts.

    Torque

    : 92 lb.ft (125 Nm)

  23. Install a new circlip on the stub shaft.

  24. NOTE: If the transmission has been replaced or overhauled, the halfshaft seals do not need to be replaced.

    Replace the LH halfshaft seal. Refer to: Halfshaft Seal LH .

  25. NOTE: Do not fully install shaft at this time.

    Using part: AA5P-4N206-A, install the splines of the halfshaft through the halfshaft seal protector and the new halfshaft seal.

  26. NOTE: Insert shaft until circlip is fully seated. When checking if circlip is seated do not pull on CV (constant velocity) joints or damage can result.

    Install the halfshaft.

  27. Install the subframe. Refer to: Front Subframe .
  28. Install the transmission support insulator and new bolts.

    Torque

    : 59 lb.ft (80 Nm)

  29. Install the rear roll restrictor bolt.

    Torque

    : 111 lb.ft (150 Nm)

    1. Install the transmission support insulator bracket and new bolts.

      Torque

      : 66 lb.ft (90 Nm)

    2. Install the transmission support insulator bracket bolt.

      Torque

      : 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

  30. Install the upper air deflector and the retainers.

  32. Install the top torque converter housing bolts.

    Torque

    : 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  33. Connect the wiring harness retainers on the transmission.

  34. Install the following items:

    1. Refer to: Starter Motor .
    2. Refer to: Cowl Panel .
    3. Refer to: Upper Intake Manifold .
    4. Refer to: Battery Tray .

  35. Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission - 6F50/6F55 .
  36. Fill with transmission fluid to the correct level. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill .
  37. After completing the repairs perform the Misfire Monitor Neutral Profile Correction procedure.
  38. If a replacement transmission assembly is being installed or a new solenoid body is installed, the solenoid body strategy will need to be updated. Refer to: Transmission Strategy Download .
