Test A: Shift & TCC Solenoids

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 11 other vehicles, including the 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis, 2002 Lincoln Town Car, 2002 Ford Crown Victoria, 2001 Mercury Mountaineer, and 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis. NOTE: All digital TR sensor and VSS DTCs must be repaired before performing the following tests.
NOTE: After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Clear DTCs and repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Ensure all EEC-V systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.
  1. Ensure gearshift lever is in "P" position. Ensure transmission harness connector is in acceptable condition. Repair as necessary. Install scan tool. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Follow on screen commands and select OUTPUT STATE CONTROL (OSC) MODE. Select TRANS-BENCH mode. If vehicle enters TRANS-BENCH mode, remain in mode and go to next step. If vehicle does not enter TRANS-BENCH mode, repeat procedure. If vehicle is still unable to enter TRANS-BENCH mode, see SCAN TOOL UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Select Parameter Identification Access (PID) modes to monitor solenoids (SSA, SSB and TCC). Using scan tool, select ON to turn appropriate solenoid on, and then press SEND. While monitoring scan tool, wiggle all wiring and connectors. Select OFF to turn appropriate solenoid off, and then press SEND. If solenoid output state changes during wiggle test, repair open or short circuit in wiring harness or connector. If solenoid output state does not change during wiggle test, go to next step.
  3. Using scan tool, cycle each solenoid on and off. If all solenoids can be heard activating, go to next step. If some or all solenoids cannot be heard activating, go to step  5 .
  4. Perform OSC trans-drive mode test for GR _ CM and TCC. See GR _ CM MODE (DRIVE MODE)  or TCC MODE (DRIVE MODE)  under OUTPUT STATE CONTROL (OSC) MODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If transmission does not shift (upshift or downshift) when commanded, go to next step. If transmission upshifts and downshifts and/or TCC engages and disengages when commanded, erase all trouble codes. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Road test vehicle and verify no shifting problems exist. If shifting problems still exist, diagnose by symptom. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS (ELECTRONIC)  or SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS (MECHANICAL)  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  5. Drain transmission fluid and remove oil pan. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Inspect internal transmission wiring harness and connectors for damage. Repair as necessary. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DVOM, measure voltage between internal transmission wiring harness terminal No. 4 and ground. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, check and repair open or short circuit in wiring harness, connector or solenoid.
  6. Using DVOM, measure voltage between internal transmission wiring harness terminal No. 4 and terminals No. 7 and 8 for SSA and SSB. See Fig 1 and Fig 3 . Select TRANS-BENCH MODE. Select parameter SSA and SSB. Monitor DVOM while cycling each solenoid (SSA and SSB) on and off. If voltage and state changes for each solenoid, go to next step. If voltage and state does not change for each solenoid, check and repair open or short circuit in wiring harness, connectors (PCM and transmission) and solenoids. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  7. Using DVOM, measure voltage between internal transmission wiring harness terminals No. 3 and 4 for TCC solenoid. See Fig 1 and Fig 4 . Select TRANS-BENCH MODE. Select parameter TCC. Monitor DVOM while cycling TCC solenoid on and off. If voltage and state changes for TCC solenoid, go to next step. If voltage and state does not change for TCC solenoid, check and repair open or short circuit in wiring harness, connectors (PCM and transmission) and solenoid.
  8. Disconnect appropriate solenoid connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between solenoid terminals. Shift solenoid (SSA and SSB) resistance should be 20-30 ohms. TCC solenoid resistance should be 10-16 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace appropriate solenoid.
  9. Using DVOM, check for continuity between ground and internal wiring harness terminals No. 3, 7 and 8. See Fig 1 . If continuity exists, replace affected solenoid. If continuity does not exist, diagnose by symptom. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS (ELECTRONIC)  or SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS (MECHANICAL)  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
