Pinpoint Test E: The Headlamps Are On Continuously

  1. E1 DETERMINE THE ALWAYS ON HEADLAMP(S) 
    NOTE: Make sure the multifunction switch is in the low beam position
    • Key in ON position.
    • Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
    • Observe the headlamps.
    • Is only one lamp illuminated? 
    1. Yes  : GO to E2.
    2. No  : GO to  E10.
  2. E2 RETRIEVE THE FEM DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCs) 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Carry out the FEM on-demand self-test.
    • Are any DTCs present? 
    1. Yes  : If DTC B1567, GO to E3.

      If DTC B1794, GO to  E5.

      All others, REFER to the FEM Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) index for correct diagnostics.

    2. No  : If not equipped with HID headlamps, GO to  E24.

      If equipped with HID headlamps, GO to  E7.

  3. E3 CHECK THE FEM (HIGH BEAM) 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: FEM C201a.
    • Does the LH or RH high beam continue to illuminate? 
    1. Yes  : GO to E4.
    2. No  : GO to  E24.
  4. E4 CHECK CIRCUIT 31S-LE15 (BK/GN) OR 31S-LE22 (BK/RD) FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Disconnect: LH Headlamp C1021 or RH Headlamp C1041.
    • Measure the resistance between the LH headlamp C1021 -6, circuit 31S-LE15 (BK/GN), harness side and ground; or between the RH headlamp C1041 -6, circuit 31S-LE22 (BK/RD), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : REPAIR or INSTALL a new headlamp assembly. REFER to HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY . TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. E5 CHECK THE FEM (HALOGEN LOW BEAM) 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: FEM C201a.
    • Does the LH or RH low beam continue to illuminate? 
    1. Yes  : GO to E6.
    2. No  : GO to  E24.
  6. E6 CHECK CIRCUIT 31S-LE16 (BK/RD) OR 31S-LE23 (BK/WH) FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Disconnect: LH Headlamp C1021 or RH Headlamp C1041.
    • Measure the resistance between the LH headlamp C1021 -4, circuit 31S-LE16 (BK/RD), harness side and ground; or between the RH headlamp C1041 -4, circuit 31S-LE23 (BK/WH), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : REPAIR or INSTALL a new headlamp assembly. REFER to HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY . TEST the system for normal operation.
  7. E7 CHECK THE FEM (HID LOW BEAM) 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: FEM C201a.
    • Does the LH or RH low beam continue to illuminate? 
    1. Yes  : GO to E8.
    2. No  : GO to  E24.
  8. E8 CHECK CIRCUIT 91S-LE16 (BN/YE) OR CIRCUIT 91S-LE23 (BN/WH) FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Disconnect: LH HID Relay C1379 or RH HID Relay C1380.
    • Measure the resistance between the LH HID relay C1379-2, circuit 91S-LE16 (BN/YE), harness side and ground; or between the RH HID relay C1380-2, circuit 91S-LE23 (BN/WH), harness side and ground

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to E9.
  9. E9 CHECK THE HID RELAY 
    • Carry out the HID relay component test.

      Refer to COMPONENT TESTING .

    • Is the HID relay OK? 
    1. Yes  : REPAIR circuit 30S-LE16 (RD/BK) (LH headlamp) or circuit 30S-LE23 (RD/WH) (RH headlamp). TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : INSTALL a new HID relay. TEST the system for normal operation.
  10. E10 DETERMINE IF LOW BEAMS OR HIGH BEAMS ARE ILLUMINATED 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Observe the headlamps.
    • Are the high beam headlamps illuminated? 
    1. Yes  : GO to E11.
    2. No  : GO to  E12.
  11. E11 MONITOR THE HIGH BEAM STATUS 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Monitor the instrument cluster high beam input status PID while moving the multifunction switch from the low beam to high beam positions.
    • Does the PID agree with the positions of the multifunction switch? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  E24.
    2. No  : INSTALL a new multifunction switch. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM . TEST the system for normal operation.
  12. E12 MONITOR THE HEADLAMP SWITCH STATUS 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Monitor the instrument cluster headlamp switch status PID while rotating the knob from the OFF position to the headlamps ON position.
    • Does the PID agree with the positions of the headlamp switch? 
    1. Yes  : GO to  E24.
    2. No  : GO to E13.
  13. E13 CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Headlamp Switch C205.
    • Carry out the headlamp switch component test.

      Refer to COMPONENT TESTING .

    • Is the headlamp switch OK? 
    1. Yes  : GO to E14.
    2. No  : INSTALL a new headlamp switch. REFER to HEADLAMP SWITCH . TEST the system for normal operation.
  14. E14 CHECK CIRCUIT 8-LE21 (WH/GN) FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220c.
    • Measure the resistance between the headlamp switch C205-10, circuit 8-LE21 (WH/GN), harness side and the instrument cluster C220c-10, circuit 8-LE21 (WH/GN), harness side; and between the headlamp switch C205-10, circuit 8-LE21 (WH/GN), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the headlamp switch and the instrument cluster; and greater than 10,000 ohms between the headlamp switch and ground? 
    1. Yes  : GO to E15.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  15. E15 CHECK CIRCUIT 8-LE21 (WH/GN) FOR SHORT TO POWER 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the headlamp switch C205-10, circuit 8-LE21 (WH/GN), harness side and ground.

    • Is the any voltage present? 
    1. Yes  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to E16.
  16. E16 CHECK CIRCUIT 8-LF14 (WH/BU) FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between the headlamp switch C205-5, circuit 8-LF14 (WH/BU), harness side and the instrument cluster C220c-8, circuit 8-LF14 (WH/BU), harness side; and between the headlamp switch C205-5, circuit 8-LF14 (WH/BU), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the headlamp switch and the instrument cluster; and greater than 10,000 ohms between the headlamp switch and ground? 
    1. Yes  : GO to E17.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  17. E17 CHECK CIRCUIT 8-LF14 (WH/BU) FOR SHORT TO POWER 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the headlamp switch C205-5, circuit 8-LF14 (WH/BU), harness side and ground.

    • Is any voltage present? 
    1. Yes  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to E18.
  18. E18 CHECK CIRCUIT 10-LE21 (GY/OG) FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between the headlamp switch C205-9, circuit 10-LE21 (GY/OG), harness side and the instrument cluster C220c-7, circuit 10-LE21 (GY/OG), harness side; and between the headlamp switch C205-9, circuit 10-LE21 (GY/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the headlamp switch and the instrument cluster; and greater than 10,000 ohms between the headlamp switch and ground? 
    1. Yes  : GO to E19.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  19. E19 CHECK CIRCUIT 10-LE21 (GY/OG) FOR SHORT TO POWER 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the headlamp switch C205-9, circuit 10-LE21 (GY/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Is any voltage present? 
    1. Yes  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to E20.
  20. E20 CHECK CIRCUIT 10-LE47 (GY/OG) FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between the headlamp switch C205-4, circuit 10-LE47 (GY/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to E21.
  21. E21 CHECK CIRCUIT 9-LE29 (BN/GN) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance between the headlamp switch C205-7, circuit 9-LE29 (BN/GN), harness side and the instrument cluster C220c-1, circuit 9-LE29 (BN/GN), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. Yes  : GO to E22.
    2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  22. E22 CHECK CIRCUIT 9-LE29 (BN/GN) FOR SHORT TO POWER 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the headlamp switch C205-7, circuit 9-LE29 (BN/GN), harness side ground.

    • Is any voltage present? 
    1. Yes  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : GO to E23.
  23. E23 CHECK FOR INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. Refer to INFORMATION, GAUGES & WARNING DEVICES . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  24. E24 CHECK FOR FEM OPERATION 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect all FEM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all FEM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. Yes  : INSTALL a new FEM. Refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
