Pinpoint Test A

  1. A1 CHECK FOR INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TEST CODES 
    NOTE: The instrument cluster PATS DTCs are the only DTCs of concern in this step. Only repair retrieved non-PATS DTCs if a customer concern is reported.
  2. A2 CHECK THE BATTERY 
    • Check the battery condition and charge.
    • Is the battery OK? 
      1. Yes  : GO to A3.
      2. No  : CHARGE or INSTALL a new battery as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. A3 CHECK THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE 
    • Measure the voltage between the positive battery post and the battery ground cable connection on the engine.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
      1. Yes  : GO to A4.
      2. No  : INSTALL a new battery ground cable. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. A4 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR GROUND 
    • Measure the voltage between the battery positive post and the starter motor case.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
      1. Yes  : GO to A5.
      2. No  : CLEAN the starter motor mounting flange and make sure the starter motor is correctly mounted. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. A5 CHECK THE POWER SUPPLY TO THE STARTER MOTOR 
    • Measure the voltage between starter motor B-terminal and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
      1. Yes  : GO to A6.
      2. No  : REPAIR circuit 30-BB10 (RD). TEST the system for normal operation.
  6. A6 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR B-TERMINAL 
    • Connect a fused jumper wire to the B-terminal of the starter motor. Momentarily connect the other lead of the jumper wire to the starter motor S-terminal.

    • Did the starter motor engage and the engine crank? 
      1. Yes  : GO to A7.
      2. No  : INSTALL a new starter motor. REFER to STARTER MOTOR  in this section. TEST the system for normal operation.
  7. A7 CHECK THE START INPUT TO THE STARTER MOTOR 
    • Disconnect: Starter Motor C197.
    • Measure the voltage between starter motor C197, circuit 50-BB10 (GY/BK), harness side and ground while holding the ignition switch in the START position.

    • Key in START position.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts in START? 
      1. Yes  : CLEAN the starter motor S-terminal and connector. CHECK the wiring and the starter motor for a loose or intermittent connection. TEST the system for normal operation.
      2. No  : GO to A8.
  8. A8 CHECK THE START INPUT TO THE STARTER RELAY 
    • Disconnect: Starter Relay.
    • Make sure the vehicle is in PARK or NEUTRAL.
    • Turn the ignition switch to START and hold.
    • Measure the voltage between starter relay pin 86, circuit 50S-BB12 (GY), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
      1. Yes  : GO to A9.
      2. No  : GO to  A14.
  9. A9 CHECK THE GROUND SUPPLY TO THE STARTER RELAY 
    • Make sure the vehicle is in PARK or NEUTRAL.
    • Turn the ignition switch to START and hold.
    • Measure the resistance between the starter relay pin 85, circuit 31S-BB12 (BK/YE), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
      1. Yes  : GO to  A11.
      2. No  : GO to A10.
  10. A10 CHECK THE CIRCUIT 31S-BB12 (BK/YE) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220b.
    • Measure the resistance between starter relay pin 85, circuit 31S-BB12 (BK/YE), harness side and instrument cluster C220b pin 18, circuit 31S-BB12 (BK/YE), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INFORMATION, GAUGES & WARNING DEVICES .
      2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  11. A11 CHECK THE BATTERY SUPPLY TO THE STARTER RELAY 
    • Measure the voltage between starter relay pin 30, circuit 30-BB13 (RD), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
      1. Yes  : GO to A12.
      2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  12. A12 CHECK CIRCUIT 50-BB10 (GY/BK) AND 50S-BB12 (GY) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect the eyelet from the starter S-terminal.
    • Measure the resistance between starter relay pin 87, circuit 50-BB10 (GY/BK), harness side and the S-terminal eyelet C197, circuit 50-BB10 (GY/BK), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
      1. Yes  : GO to A13.
      2. No  : REPAIR the circuit(s). TEST the system for normal operation.
  13. A13 CHECK CIRCUIT 50-BB10 (GY/BK) AND 50S-BB12 (GY) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Measure the resistance between starter relay pin 87, circuit 50-BB10 (GY/BK), harness side and S-terminal eyelet C197, circuit 50-BB10 (GY/BK), harness side.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new starter relay. TEST the system for normal operation.
      2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  14. A14 CHECK FUSE 201 (5A) 
    • Check fuse: CJB Fuse 201 (5A).
    • Is CJB fuse 201 (5A) open? 
      1. Yes  : GO to  A21.
      2. No  : GO to A15.
  15. A15 CHECK THE START INPUT TO FUSE 201 (5A) 
    • Disconnect: CJB Fuse 201 (5A).
    • Turn the ignition switch to the START position and hold.
    • Measure the voltage between CJB fuse 201 (5A) input terminal and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
      1. Yes  : GO to  A19.
      2. No  : GO to A16.
  16. A16 CHECK THE BATTERY INPUT TO THE IGNITION SWITCH 
    • Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250.
    • Measure the voltage between ignition switch C250 pin 1, circuit 30-BB9 (RD), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
      1. Yes  : GO to A17.
      2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  17. A17 CHECK CIRCUIT 50-DD5 (GY/BK) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250 pin 3, circuit 50-DD5 (GY/BK), harness side and CJB fuse 201 (5A) input terminal, circuit 50-DD5 (GY/BK), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
      1. Yes  : GO to A18.
      2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  18. A18 CHECK CIRCUIT 50-DD5 (GY/BK) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250 pin 3, circuit 50-DD5 (GY/BK), harness side and CJB fuse 201 (5A) input terminal, circuit 50-DD5 (GY/BK), harness side.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
      1. Yes  : INSTALL a new ignition switch. TEST the system for normal operation.
      2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  19. A19 CHECK CIRCUIT 50-BB15 (GY/OG) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Connect: CJB Fuse 201 (5A).
    • Disconnect: Digital TR Sensor C167.
    • Turn the ignition switch to the START position and hold.
    • Measure the voltage between digital TR sensor C167 pin 10, circuit 50-BB15 (GY/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
      1. Yes  : GO to A20.
      2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  20. A20 CHECK CIRCUIT 50S-BB12 (GY) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance between digital TR sensor C167 pin 12, circuit 50S-BB12 (GY), harness side and starter relay pin 86, circuit 50S-BB12 (GY), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
      1. Yes  : ADJUST the digital TR sensor. REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 5R55S .
      2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  21. A21 CHECK CIRCUIT 50-BB15 (GY/OG) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Measure the resistance between digital TR sensor C167 pin 10, circuit 50-BB15 (GY/OG), harness side and CJB fuse 201 (5A) output terminal C270b pin 3, circuit 50-BB15 (GY/OG), harness side.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
      1. Yes  : GO to A22.
      2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  22. A22 CHECK CIRCUIT 50S-BB12 (GY) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Measure the resistance between digital TR sensor C167 pin 12, circuit 50S-BB12 (GY), harness side and starter relay pin 86, circuit 50S-BB12 (GY), harness side.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
      1. Yes  : GO to A23.
      2. No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  23. A23 INSTALL A NEW FUSE 201 (5A) 
    • Connect: Digital TR Sensor Switch C167.
    • Install a new CJB fuse 201 (5A). Retest the system.
    • Does the fuse open? 
      1. Yes  : ADJUST the digital TR sensor. REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 5R55S .
      2. No  : RETEST for normal operation. VERIFY the symptom.
