Self-Diagnostic System
Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below driver's side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Select vehicle to be tested from NGS tester menu. If NGS tester does not communicate with vehicle, ensure program card is properly installed. Check NGS tester cable connections and ensure ignition switch is in ON position. If NGS tester still does not communicate with vehicle, go to TEST J: NO COMMUNICATION WITH NATURAL GAS VEHICLE MODULE under SYSTEM TESTS. If NGS tester communicates with vehicle, perform data link diagnostic self-test for NGV module. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - ECONOLINE article.
If NGS tester responds with SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record DTCs. If DTCs are retrieved, perform appropriate test. See NATURAL GAS VEHICLE MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX table. If NGS tester displays NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIPPED or if no DTCs are retrieved, repair by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX table under SYSTEM TESTS.
