Test A: Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor Circuit Failure (DTC B1219)

- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below driver's side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using NGS tester, monitor Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) module PID TANKPR. If PID indicates zero psi, go to next step. If PID does not indicate zero psi, check connectors for loose and corroded pins. Repair connectors as necessary. Retest system operation. If connectors are okay, clear DTCs. Using NGS tester, perform data link diagnostic self-test for NGV module. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - ECONOLINE article. If DTC B1219 is retrieved again, replace NGV module. See NATURAL GAS VEHICLE MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGV module 60-pin harness connector C1009. NGV module is located on left inner fender well, behind coolant recovery bottle. Connect NGV module 60-pin harness connector C1009 to 60-pin Breakout Box (014-00322) following manufacturer's instructions. Leave NGV module disconnected from breakout box. Disconnect fuel tank pressure sensor Black 4-pin harness connector C3166. Fuel tank pressure sensor is located in center fuel tank solenoid valve. See Figure. Measure resistance between breakout box pins No. 7 and 46. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair fuel tank pressure sensor Black 4-pin harness connector Red/Pink wire for short to fuel tank pressure sensor Black 4-pin harness connector Gray/Red wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Connect NGV module to breakout box. Leave NGV module 60-pin harness connector C1009 connected to breakout box. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between fuel tank pressure sensor Black 4-pin harness connector C3166 Brown/White wire terminal and Gray/Red wire terminal. If voltage is 4-6 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 4-6 volts, go to step 6.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect a fused jumper wire between fuel tank pressure sensor Black 4-pin harness connector C3166 Brown/White wire terminal and Red/Pink wire terminal. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between breakout box pins No. 7 and 26. If voltage is 4.61 volts or less, go to next step. If voltage is more than 4.61 volts, go to step 6.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGV module from breakout box. Leave NGV module 60-pin harness connector C1009 connected to breakout box. Measure resistance between breakout box pin No. 26 and fuel tank pressure sensor Black 4-pin harness connector C3166 Brown/White wire terminal. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Brown/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open in fuel tank pressure sensor Black 4-pin harness connector Red/Pink wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect NGV module from breakout box, if not previously disconnected. Leave NGV module 60-pin harness connector C1009 connected to breakout box. Measure resistance between breakout box pin No. 46 and fuel tank pressure sensor Black 4-pin harness connector C3166 Gray/Red wire terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Gray/Red wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Measure resistance between breakout box pin No. 26 and pin No. 40 or 60. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in fuel tank pressure sensor Black 4-pin harness connector C3166 Brown/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Measure resistance between breakout box pin No. 40 or 60 and pin No. 46. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in fuel tank pressure sensor Black 4-pin harness connector C3166 Gray/Red wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Measure resistance between breakout box pin No. 26 and fuel tank pressure sensor harness connector C3166 Brown/White wire terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Brown/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Measure voltage between ground and fuel tank pressure sensor harness connector C3166 Brown/White wire terminal. If voltage is less than .5 volt, go to next step. If voltage is .5 volt or more, repair short to voltage in Brown/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Check operation of fuel tank solenoids. See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - EEC-V - NGV article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If fuel tank solenoids operate properly, go to next step. If fuel tank solenoid(s) do not operate properly, replace fuel tank solenoid(s). See FUEL TANK SOLENOID under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
- Check fuel system for leaks. See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - EEC-V - NGV article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If fuel system leaks, repair as necessary. Retest system operation. If fuel system does not leak, replace NGV module. See NATURAL GAS VEHICLE MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
