Test I: Ecu Circuit Failure (DTC B1342)

- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) module 60-pin harness connector C1009. NGV module is located on left inner fender well, behind coolant recovery bottle. Inspect harness and module connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If connectors are okay, go to next step. Repair or replace connectors as necessary. Retest system operation.
- Connect NGV module 60-pin harness connector C1009 to 60-pin Breakout Box (014-00322) following manufacturer's instructions. Leave NGV module disconnected from breakout box. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between breakout box pin No. 37 or 57 and pin No. 40 or 60. If voltage is 10.5 volts or less, go to next step. If voltage is more than 10.5 volts, go to step 4.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and breakout box pin No. 40 or 60. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open in NGV module 60-pin harness connector C1009 terminal No. 37 and/or No. 57 (Red wires). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in NGV module 60-pin harness connector C1009 terminal No. 40 and/or No. 60 (Black wires). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect NGV module to breakout box. Leave NGV module 60-pin harness connector C1009 connected to breakout box. Measure resistance between breakout box pin No. 16 and pin No. 40 or 60. If resistance less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace NGV module. See NATURAL GAS VEHICLE MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
- Disconnect instrument cluster White 16-pin harness connector. Measure resistance between breakout box pin No. 16 and instrument cluster White 16-pin harness connector C220a terminal No. 12 (Black/White wire). See Figure. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Measure resistance between breakout box pin No. 38 and instrument cluster White 16-pin harness connector C220a terminal No. 7 (Yellow/White wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Measure voltage between breakout box pin No. 38 and pin No. 40 or 60. If voltage is less than .5 volt, go to next step. If voltage is .5 volt or more, repair short to voltage in NGV module 60-pin harness connector C1009 terminal No. 38 (Yellow/White). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Disconnect NGV module from breakout box. Leave NGV module 60-pin harness connector C1009 connected to breakout box. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster White 16-pin harness connector C220a terminal No. 7 (Yellow/White wire). See Figure. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Yellow/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system operation.
- Connect Instrument Gauge Tester (014-R1063) leads to breakout box pins No. 16 and 38. Adjust tester to 15 ohms. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait 60 seconds. If fuel gauge does not indicate empty, go to next step. If fuel gauge indicates empty, go to step 11.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position, then to ON position. Tap lightly on instrument cluster. Wait 60 seconds. If fuel gauge does not indicate empty, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - ECONOLINE - GASOLINE & DIESEL article. Retest system operation. If fuel gauge indicates empty, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Adjust tester to 160 ohms. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait 60 seconds. If fuel gauge does not indicate full, replace instrument cluster. Retest system operation. If fuel gauge indicates full, system is operating properly at this time.
