Test E: Ignition Key Transponder Signal Not Received

NOTE: Large metallic objects on the same key ring with Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) ignition key may cause vehicle starting problems and record DTCs under certain conditions. If a fault cannot be identified, examine key ring for such objects. If objects are found that could interfere with PATS operation, turn ignition switch to LOCK position and restart engine with all metallic objects held away from ignition key.
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below center of instrument panel, right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, perform instrument cluster self-test. If only DTC B1600 exists, go to next step. If no DTCs exist, system is functioning properly at this time. If any other DTCs exist, repair those DTCs before proceeding with this test. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Cut a new encoded ignition key. Program ignition key. See ERASE ALL KEYS & PROGRAM 2 KEYS  under PROGRAMMING. Using NGS tester clear DTCs and perform instrument cluster self-test. If DTC B1600 exists, go to next step. If any other DTCs exist, perform appropriate test. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no DTCs exist, system is functioning properly at this time.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Replace PATS transceiver module. See PATS TRANSCEIVER MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using an original ignition key (not key programmed in previous step), turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester perform instrument cluster self-test. If DTC B1600 does not reset, system is functioning properly at this time. If DTC B1600 does reset, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Cycle ignition switch using 2 encoded keys. Repeat self-test and clear DTCs.
