Cylinder Head R & I: Installation

- Install cylinder head gasket on cylinder block so tab is facing forward and lettering is away from cylinder block. See Fig 1.
- Ensure camshaft timing mark is aligned with cylinder head timing mark (keyway at 6 o'clock position). See Figure. The No. 1 piston must be at TDC of compression stroke so crankshaft sprocket timing mark aligns with oil pump housing timing mark. See Figure.
- Install cylinder head. Apply light coat of engine oil to NEW cylinder head bolts and install.
- Tighten cylinder head bolts to specification in sequence. See Fig 2. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article.NOTE: If valves or valve seats were serviced, valve clearance should be checked. See VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT under ADJUSTMENTS in this article.
- To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Fill cooling system with Ford Coolant (E2FZ-19549-A).
- When installing fuel lines, install new "O" rings on fuel lines. Use only specified fuel resistant "O" rings (Brown in color). Lightly coat "O" rings with clean engine oil before installing. Clean fittings and replace garter spring (if necessary).
