Valve Clearance Adjustment

NOTE: Hydraulic valve lifters are used. No valve clearance adjustment is required when performing tune-up procedure. Valve clearance adjustment must be performed when refacing valve or valve seat.
  1. Position No. 1 piston at TDC of compression stroke. Install Valve Lifter Collapser (T81P-6500-A) on No. 1 intake rocker arm. Slowly apply pressure until valve lifter is completely bottomed.
  2. Hold valve lifter in this position and check clearance between rocker arm and valve stem tip. If clearance exceeds specification, check for defective camshaft, valve tip or fulcrum. See COLLAPSED VALVE LIFTER SPECIFICATIONS table.
  3. With engine at TDC, check clearance on No. 1 intake, No. 1 exhaust and No. 2 intake valves. Rotate crankshaft 180 degrees. Check clearance on No. 3 intake and No. 3 exhaust valves.
  4. Rotate crankshaft 180 degrees. Check clearance on No. 4 intake, No. 4 exhaust and No. 2 exhaust valves.
