8HP50/850RE Automatic Transmission (Service Information): Installation

CAUTION:

The transmission and torque converter must be removed as an assembly to avoid component damage. The converter driveplate, oil pump, or oil seal can be damaged if the converter is left attached to the driveplate during removal. Be sure to remove the transmission and converter as an assembly.

NOTE:

If the transmission is being reconditioned (clutch/seal replacement) or replaced, it is necessary to perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .

  1. If a replacement transmission is being installed, transfer any components necessary, such as the Mechanical Park Release (MPR) bracket and lever from the original transmission onto the replacement transmission.
  2. Apply a light coating of Mopar® High Temp Grease to the torque converter hub pocket in the rear pocket of the engine's crankshaft.
  3. Install the torque converter. Refer to TORQUE CONVERTER, INSTALLATION .

  4. Place the transmission on a jack and secure with chains or similar.
  5. Raise transmission and align the torque converter with the flexplate and the transmission converter housing with the engine block.
    NOTE:

    If the torque converter was spun or removed, align torque converter bolt holes with the starter pocket to ease bolt installation.

  6. Move transmission forward. Then raise, lower, or tilt transmission to align the converter housing with the engine block dowels.
    NOTE:

    It may be necessary to support the rear of the engine during transmission installation.

  7. Carefully work transmission forward and over engine block dowels until converter hub is seated in crankshaft. Verify that no wires, or the transmission vent hose, have become trapped between the engine block and the transmission.

  8. Install the transmission to engine oil pan bolts.

  9. Install remaining transmission to engine and engine to transmission bolts. Tighten all torque converter housing bolts to the proper specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  10. Rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction to line up the close tolerance torque converter bolt hole in the flexplate, then start the first torque converter to flexplate bolt.

    NOTE:

    Install all torque converter bolts by hand first. There are 3 sets of two bolts 120° apart.

  11. Rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction and hand start the flexplate to torque converter bolts as they become accessible.
  12. Tighten all of the torque converter to flexplate bolts to the proper specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  13. Connect the transmission vent hose.

  14. Position the transmission oil heater and install the transmission oil heater bolts, tighten to the proper specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  15. Connect the transmission oil lines to the transmission and oil heater. Be sure that the lines are fully seated.
  16. Snap the dust covers over the line fitting.

  17. Install the speed nut retaining the transmission cooler line bracket at the bellhousing, near the engine oil dipstick tube.

  18. Connect left front transmission line clip.

  19. Install the coolant control valve bracket bolt and tighten securely.
  20. Install the oxygen sensor wire harness bracket bolt and tighten securely.
  21. Install the transmission oil heater coolant hose bracket bolts to the right side of the transmission.

  22. Install the Manual Park Release (MPR) cable into the bracket and lock into place.

  23. Check O-ring on transmission wire harness connector, and replace if necessary.
  24. Install the transmission wire harness connector into the adapter plug. Turn bayonet lock of the adapter plug clockwise to lock.
  25. Install the transfer case. Refer to INSTALLATION .
    NOTE:

    Support the front of the front driveshaft, do not install the front driveshaft to axle bolts until the left side catalytic converter is installed.

  26. If 4WD, install the front driveshaft to the transfer case. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, FRONT, INSTALLATION .

  27. Install the transmission crossmember and tighten bolts to the proper specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  28. Install the transmission mount nuts and tighten to the proper specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  29. Install the rear driveshaft. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR, INSTALLATION .

  30. Remove the cable tie from the MPR lever.
  31. Connect the MPR cable to the MPR lever.
  32. Install heat shield for rear driveshaft/muffler.
  33. If 4WD, install the front driveshaft heat shield.
  34. If 4WD, install the front driveshaft to axle flange bolts and tighten to the proper specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  35. Install the muffler. Refer to MUFFLER, EXHAUST, INSTALLATION (3.6L SINGLE EXHAUST) or MUFFLER, EXHAUST, INSTALLATION (3.6L DUAL EXHAUST) .

  36. Install the starter. Refer to STARTER, INSTALLATION or STARTER, INSTALLATION, 3.6L W/ESS .
  37. If equipped, install skid plates. Refer to PLATE, SKID, FRONT, INSTALLATION , PLATE, SKID, FRONT SUSPENSION, INSTALLATION , PLATE, SKID, FUEL TANK, INSTALLATION , PLATE, SKID, TRANSMISSION, INSTALLATION or PLATE, SKID, TRANSFER CASE, INSTALLATION .
  38. Lower the vehicle.
  39. Fill the transmission with appropriate fluid. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - TRANSMISSION FILL AFTER SERVICE  .
  40. Connect the battery negative cable.
  41. If the valve body is replaced, program the Transmission Control Module (TCM). Refer to MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL (TCM), MODULE PROGRAMMING .
  42. Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
