Cover, Instrument Panel: Removal

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the supplemental restraint system before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor, or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the supplemental restraint system. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury when removing a deployed airbag, rubber gloves, eye protection, and a long-sleeved shirt should be worn. There may be deposits on the airbag unit and other interior surfaces. In large doses, these deposits may cause irritation to the skin and eyes.

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury, use extreme care to prevent any foreign material from entering the passenger airbag, or becoming entrapped between the passenger airbag cushion and the instrument panel top pad. Failure to observe this warning could result in occupant injuries upon airbag deployment.

  1. Remove both instrument panel end caps (Refer to CAP, INSTRUMENT PANEL END, REMOVAL ).
  2. Remove the instrument panel center closeout. Refer to CLOSEOUT, CENTER, REMOVAL .
  3. Remove the steering column. Refer to COLUMN, REMOVAL .
  4. Remove the instrument panel center trim bezel. Refer to BEZEL, INSTRUMENT PANEL, APPLIQUE, REMOVAL .
  5. Remove the radio. Refer to RADIO, REMOVAL .
  6. Remove the A-pillar trim panels. Refer to PANEL, A-PILLAR TRIM, REMOVAL .
  7. Remove the defroster grille. Refer to GRILLE, DEFROSTER, REMOVAL .
  8. Remove the cowl trim panels. Refer to PANEL, COWL TRIM, SIDE, REMOVAL .
  9. Remove the right passenger silencer panel. Refer to PANEL, SILENCER, REMOVAL .
  10. If equipped, remove the instrument panel center tweeter. Refer to SPEAKER, REMOVAL .

  11. Working in the instrument cluster bay, disengage the wire harness retainers (1) from the instrument panel cover.

  12. Disconnect the wire harness connector for the cabin ambient temperature sensor (1). Disengage the wire harness retainer (2).

  13. Working in the radio bay, disconnect the wire harness connectors (1) from the HVAC air ducts.

  14. Guide the wire harness for the center tweeter out between the instrument panel cover (1) and the air duct (3).

  15. Working in the glove box bay, disconnect the passenger airbag wire harness connector (1).
  16. Remove the nuts (2) that secure the passenger airbag to the instrument panel carrier (3).

  17. Remove the bolt (1) and the screws (2) from the top of the instrument panel cover (3).

  18. Remove the retainers (1) that secure the defrost ducts to both A-pillars.
  19. Remove the fasteners (2) from the left side of the instrument panel cover (3).

  20. Remove the fasteners (1) from the right side of the instrument panel cover (1).

  21. With the help of an assistant, remove the instrument panel cover (1) from the instrument panel reinforcement. Verify the all of the harness connectors and retainers are disconnected. Remove the instrument panel cover (1) from the vehicle.
