Test 4A: Cluster Message Mismatch

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Dodge Dakota. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Prior to performing any air bag system test, go to PRETEST INSPECTION & DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform TEST VER-1: AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST  after all repairs unless otherwise directed.
  1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DRBIII, determine if CLUSTER MESSAGE MISMATCH is an active or stored Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). If CLUSTER MESSAGE MISMATCH is an active DTC, go to next step. If CLUSTER MESSAGE MISMATCH is a stored DTC, go to TEST 1B: REPAIRING STORED CODES .
  2. Using DRBIII, read MIC DTCs. If DRBIII displays active MIC DTCs, diagnose instrument cluster malfunction. If DRBIII does not display active MIC DTCs, go to next step.
  3. On DRBIII, select PASSIVE RESTRAINTS, AIR BAG, MONITOR DISPLAY and WARNING LIGHT STATUS. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Turn ignition switch to ON position and observe DRBIII screen after 6-8 seconds. If DRBIII LIGHT ON BY MIC and LIGHT REQ BY ACM monitors match, replace Air Bag Control Module (ACM). See AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE (ACM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If DRBIII LIGHT ON BY MIC and LIGHT REQ BY ACM monitors do not match, replace instrument cluster. See ELECTROMECHANICAL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (EMIC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Perform body verification test. See TEST VER-2: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
