Section 3 (8HP50/850RE Automatic Transmission (Service Information)): Installation

CAUTION:

When supporting or lifting the transmission at the oil pan the weight of the transmission must be distributed evenly on the lifting fixture. Failure to do so could damage the oil pan and transmission.

NOTE:

Make sure that the transmission dowel pins are seated in engine block and protrude far enough to hold transmission in alignment.

NOTE:

If the transmission is being reconditioned (clutch/seal replacement) or replaced, it is necessary to perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .

  1. Install the torque converter. Refer to TORQUE CONVERTER, INSTALLATION .

  2. For All Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles  , position the extension housing (2), install the seven bolts (1) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  3. For Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles  , position the adapter bracket (4), install the adapter bracket bolts (1) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  4. For RWD vehicles  , position the rear transmission mount (3), install the transmission mount bolts (2) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  5. For AWD vehicles  , position the adapter bracket (2), install the adapter bracket bolts (3) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  6. For AWD vehicles  , position the rear transmission mount (4), install the rear transmission mount bolts (1) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  7. Verify that the rubber access plugs (1) are installed in the front of the transmission.
    NOTE:

    Hold torque converter in place during transmission installation.

  8. Install the transmission vent hose (1) and position the vacuum pump and bracket (2) in place.

  9. Position the transmission to the vehicle.
  10. Install the upper bell housing stud bolts (1). Do not tighten at this time.

  11. Install the five (four shown in illustration) transmission to engine bolts (1). Do not tighten at this time.

  12. Install the RH transmission to engine stud bolt (1).
  13. Tighten ALL  the transmission to engine fasteners to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  14. Install the cover (2), the cover bolt (1), and the Left Hand (LH) engine to transmission bolt (3) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  15. Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction to line up the alignment hole (1) in the flexplate, then start the first bolt.

  16. Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until converter bolts (1) are accessible. There are three sets of two bolts 120° apart. Install the remaining bolts and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  17. For RWD vehicles  , position the crossmember, install the bolts (1) to the frame and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  18. For RWD vehicles  , install the bolts (2) securing rear support and cushion to the crossmember and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  19. For AWD vehicles  , install the transfer case. Refer to INSTALLATION .

  20. Remove the transmission jack (1).

  21. Connect the transmission fluid cooler lines (1) at transmission.

  22. Install the wiring harness bracket, nut and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  23. Install the wiring harness bracket, nut and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  24. Connect the wiring harness (1) to the transmission.

  25. Position the wiring harness (3) and bracket in place.
  26. Connect the wiring harness (1) to the transmission.
  27. Install the wiring harness bracket bolts (2) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  33. Turn the locking mechanism lock (1) of the wiring harness connector (2) clockwise to secure.

  34. Position the Manual Park Release (MPR) cable bracket/cable in place, install the bolts (2) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  35. Install the MPR cable (1) on the MPR lever.
  36. Install the starter. Refer to STARTER, INSTALLATION .
  37. For RWD vehicles  , install the lower intermediate steering shaft. Refer to SHAFT, INTERMEDIATE, LOWER, INSTALLATION .
  38. For AWD vehicles  , install the steering gear. Refer to GEAR, INSTALLATION .
  39. Install the rear driveshaft. Refer to INSTALLATION .
  40. Perform the STANDARD PROCEDURE - TRANSMISSION FILL AFTER SERVICE. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - TRANSMISSION FILL AFTER SERVICE  .
  41. If the valve body is replaced, program the Transmission Control Module (TCM). Refer to MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL (TCM), MODULE PROGRAMMING .
  42. Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
