Seal, Drive Pinion: Installation

- Install NEW pinion seal with Handle (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (1) and Installer (special tool #2018900030, Installer, Front Pinion Seal) (2).
- Apply a light coat of teflon sealant to the pinion flange splines.
- Lightly tap the pinion flange onto the pinion until a few threads are showing.
- Install flange washer and NEW
pinion nut.
- Hold pinion flange (2) with Flange Wrench (special tool #8979, Wrench, Pinion Flange) (1) and tighten pinion nut until pinion end play is taken up.
- Rotate pinion several times to seat bearings.
- Measure Total Torque To Rotate (TTTR) with an inch pound torque wrench (2) and compare it to recorded measurement. Tighten pinion nut in small increments, until pinion TTTR is 0.40-0.57 N.m (3-5 in. lbs.) greater than recorded measurement.
- Rotate pinion several times then verify TTTR again.
- Install axle shafts. Refer to SHAFT, AXLE, INSTALLATION .
- Install propeller shaft with reference marks aligned (Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, FRONT HEAVY DUTY, INSTALLATION and SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR HEAVY DUTY, INSTALLATION ).
- Check differential fluid level. Refer to CAPACITIES AND RECOMMENDED FLUIDS, SPECIFICATIONS .
