PRE-CLEANING
- Disconnect and isolate both of the negative battery cables.
- Remove the right side battery. Refer to BATTERY, REMOVAL .
- Remove the engine cover. Refer to COVER, ENGINE, REMOVAL, 6.7L .
- Remove the air cleaner body. Refer to BODY, AIR CLEANER, REMOVAL, 6.7L .
- Disconnect the breather hose (3).
- Loosen the clamp (1) and remove the inlet tube (2) from the turbocharger.
- Loosen clamp (3) and disconnect the right Charge Air Cooler (CAC) hose (1) from cooler (2).
- Loosen the clamp (1) and remove the right CAC hose (2) from turbocharger and remove the hose.
COMPRESSOR STAGE REMOVAL AND CLEANING
- Mark compressor housing and bearing housing with paint marker before removal in order to provide an alignment reference.
- Loosen V-band clamp on compressor side of turbocharger. Fully remove the nut and expand the V-band clamp enough to rest the end of the stud on the sleeve to allow the V-band to be held open.NOTE:
Removing the cover at an angle may result in damage to the tip of the impeller blades.
- Remove the compressor cover by pulling it straight out then discard the V-band clamp.NOTE:
If cover does not come off at this point, do not attempt to force it off, replace turbocharger assembly.
- Lightly tap around cover with a rubber mallet if the cover is difficult to remove.NOTE:
Some impellers may have a factory placed paint mark which, after normal operation, appears to be a crack. Remove this mark with a suitable solvent to verify that it is not a crack. Replace turbocharger if damage exists.
- Visually inspect the impeller and compressor wheel fins for nicks, cracks, or chips.
- Clean compressor housing by applying Mopar® brake cleaner and wiping with clean paper towels or any other absorbent wipes.NOTE:
Do not use shop air, as this will result in rotor spinning quickly which is destructive to the bearings.
- Clean the diffuser plate by applying Mopar® brake cleaner and wiping with clean paper towels or any other absorbent wipes.
- Lubricant and install a NEW
O-ring seal onto the turbocharger housing.NOTE:
Installing the cover at an angle may result in damage to the tip of the impeller blades.
- Using a NEW V-band clamp, install the compressor housing on the turbocharger. Ensure the alignment pin is engaged into the alignment hole and the paint marker markings line up.
- Be sure compressor housing is seated fully. Tighten the NEW V-band clamp to 9 N.m 80 (in. lbs.).
- Visually inspect the impeller and compressor wheel fins for nicks, cracks, or chips. Replace turbocharger if damage exists.
- Visually inspect the turbocharger compressor housing for an impeller rubbing condition. Replace the turbocharger if the condition exists.
POST-CLEANING
- Install the right Charge Air Cooler (CAC) hose (2) to the turbocharger and tighten the clamp (1) to 11 N.m (8 ft. lbs.).
- Connect the right CAC hose (1) to cooler (2) and tighten the clamp (3) to 11 N.m (8 ft. lbs.).
- Install the inlet tube (2) to the turbocharger and tighten the clamp (1) to 11 N.m (8 ft. lbs.).
- Connect the breather hose (3).
- Install the air cleaner body. Refer to BODY, AIR CLEANER, INSTALLATION, 6.7L .
- Install the engine cover. Refer to COVER, ENGINE, INSTALLATION, 6.7L .
- Connect the right battery. Refer to BATTERY, INSTALLATION .
- Connect both of the negative battery cables.
- Check for any cooling or exhaust leaks and confirm the turbocharger is operating properly. For cooling, refer to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING . For exhaust, refer to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING . For turbocharger, refer to TURBOCHARGER, DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING, 6.7L .
