Removal And Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2019 RAM 3500 HD and 2019 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
REMOVAL
NOTE:
The ring and pinion gears are serviced as a matched set. Never replace the ring gear/pinion gear without replacing the other matching gear.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
- Mark pinion flange and propeller shaft for installation alignment.
- Remove propeller shaft. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove differential from the housing. Refer to CASE ASSEMBLY, DIFFERENTIAL, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove bolts holding ring gear to differential case.
- Drive ring gear (1) from differential case with a soft hammer.
- Remove pinion flange seal. Refer to SEAL, DRIVE PINION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove pinion gear (1) from housing with pinion Driver (special tool #2067300030, Remover, Pinion Gear) and handle (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) and a hammer.NOTE:
Thread the driver on the pinion shaft till it bottoms out.
- Remove front pinion bearing (1).
- Remove collapsible spacer from the pinion shaft.
- Remove rear pinion bearing with Bearing Splitter (special tool #1130, Splitter, Bearing/Gear) and a press.
- Remove pinion depth shim from the pinion gear shaft and record thickness of the shims.
- Remove front pinion bearing cup from the housing with a punch and hammer, and discard cup.
- Remove rear pinion bearing cup from the housing with a punch and hammer, if bearing is going to be replaced.
INSTALLATION
- Install NEW
front pinion bearing cup with Installer (special tool #2067100030, Installer, Pinion Tail Bearing Race) (1) and Handle (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (2).
- Install NEW
rear pinion bearing cup with Installer (special tool #2067000030, Installer, Pinion Head Bearing Race) and (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (2).
- Install pinion depth shim (1) on the pinion gear shaft (2).
- Install rear pinion bearing (4) with Installer (special tool #8228, Installer, Bearing) (2) and a press (1).
- Install NEW collapsible spacer (1) on the pinion (2).
- Lubricate pinion and bearings.
- Install pinion into the housing (2) and place front pinion bearing onto the pinion shaft. Draw the pinion shaft into the front bearing with Installer (special tool #8981, Installer, Bearing Cup) (1).
- Install NEW pinion seal (1). Refer to SEAL, DRIVE PINION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Apply a light coat of pipe sealant to the pinion flange splines.
- Hold pinion and lightly tap the pinion flange (2) onto the pinion, until a few threads are showing.
- Install pinion flange washer and NEW pinion nut.
- Tighten pinion nut until pinion end play is eliminated.
- Rotate pinion several times to seat pinion bearings.
- Measure Pinion Torque To Rotate (1) with an inch pound torque wrench (2). Tighten pinion nut in 6.8 N.m (5 ft. lbs.) increments until pinion torque to rotate is achieved.
- Rotate pinion several times then verify pinion rotating torque again.
- Install NEW ring gear bolts (1) and tighten them alternately to seat the ring gear. Tighten to proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATION .
- Install differential in housing. Refer to CASE ASSEMBLY, DIFFERENTIAL, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Measure Total Torque To Rotate (TTTR) with an inch pound torque wrench for specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATION .
- Verify ring gear backlash and gear contact pattern.
- Check differential fluid level. Refer to CAPACITIES AND RECOMMENDED FLUIDS, SPECIFICATIONS .
- Align pinion flange and propeller shaft for installation.
- Install the propeller shaft. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Install the tire and wheel assembly(s).
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
