Removal And Installation

REMOVAL 

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly (s).
  3. Mark the propeller shaft and pinion flange for installation reference.
  4. Remove propeller shaft. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  5. Remove axle shafts. Refer to SHAFT, AXLE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  6. Rotate pinion gear three or four times.

  7. Measure and record the Total Torque To Rotate (TTTR) necessary to rotate the pinion gear and differential with an inch pound torque wrench (2).

  8. Remove pinion flange nut (1).
  9. Remove pinion flange with Pinion Flange Puller (special tool #8992, Remover, Pinion Flange) (2).

  10. Remove pinion shaft seal with seal puller (special tool #7794-A, Remover, Seal) and a slide hammer.

INSTALLATION 

  1. Install NEW  pinion seal with Handle (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (1) and Installer (special tool #2068500030, Installer, Pinion Oil Seal) (2).
  2. Apply a light coat of pipe sealant to the pinion flange splines.
  3. Lightly tap the pinion flange onto the pinion until a few threads are showing.
  4. Install flange washer and NEW  pinion nut.

  5. Tighten pinion nut (1) to. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATION .

  6. Rotate pinion several times to seat bearings.
  7. Measure pinion (1) Torque To Rotate with an inch pound torque wrench (2) and compare it to recorded measurement. Tighten pinion nut in small increments, until pinion Torque To Rotate is 0.40-0.57 N.m (3-5 in. lbs.) greater than recorded measurement.
  8. Rotate pinion several times then verify pinion Torque To Rotate again.
  9. Install axle shafts. Refer to SHAFT, AXLE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  10. Install propeller shaft with reference marks aligned. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  11. Check differential fluid level. Refer to CAPACITIES AND RECOMMENDED FLUIDS, SPECIFICATIONS .
