Balance Shafts/Chain/Sprockets

NOTE: For service procedures requiring only temporary relocation of carrier assembly, refer to BALANCE SHAFT CARRIER procedure below.

Drain engine oil.
Remove the oil pan and pick-up tube (Refer to ENGINE/LUBRICATION/OIL PAN - REMOVAL) .
If replacing crankshaft sprocket, remove oil pump (Refer to ENGINE/LUBRICATION/OIL PUMP - REMOVAL) .

Remove chain cover (6) , guide (7) and tensioner (2). Discard pivot screw (5) and adjuster screw (4). See Fig 1.

Remove screw retaining balance shaft drive sprocket (2). See Fig 2. Remove chain and sprocket.

Using two wide pry bars, work the crankshaft sprocket back and forth until it is off the crankshaftshaft.

Remove gear cover retaining stud (1) (double ended to also retain chain guide). Remove cover (6) and balance shaft gears (5). See Fig 3.

Remove rear cover (1) and balance shafts (3). See Fig 4.
Remove four carrier to crankcase attaching bolts to separate carrier from engine bedplate.
