Test G: Shock Or Lag Time When Shifting From Neutral To Reverse

NOTE: If shock or lag time of 2 seconds or more occurs when transaxle is shifted from Neutral to Reverse with engine idling, likely cause may be abnormal reverse clutch or low-reverse brake pressures, or faulty low-reverse brake solenoid valve, low-reverse brake, reverse clutch, valve body, throttle position sensor or faulty PCM.
  1. Using scan tool, attempt to actuate low-reverse solenoid valve. If solenoid operation can be heard, go to next step. If solenoid operation cannot be heard, replace solenoid. See SOLENOID VALVES  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. If shock occurs when shifting, go to next step. If shock occurs while starting off, go to step  7 .
  3. Measure hydraulic pressure at reverse clutch with gearshift lever in "R" position. See HYDRAULIC PRESSURE TESTS  under PERFORMANCE TESTS. If pressure is within specification, go to next step. If pressure is not within specification, go to step  10 .
  4. Measure hydraulic pressure at low-reverse brake with gearshift lever in "R" position. See HYDRAULIC PRESSURE TESTS  under PERFORMANCE TESTS. If pressure is within specification, go to next step. If pressure is not within specification, go to step  10 .
  5. Remove valve body assembly. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. Air check reverse clutch and low-reverse brake. See Figure . If air checks are okay, go to step  10 . If air checks are not okay, go to next step.
  6. Remove transaxle assembly. See appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. Disassemble transaxle and inspect reverse clutch and low-reverse brake. See appropriate OVERHAUL article. Check for burned clutch components, defective seals and retainer interference. Repair as necessary.
  7. If shock occurrence is intermittent, go to next step. If shock occurrence is not intermittent, go to step  10 .
  8. Using scan tool, monitor throttle position sensor parameters. With throttle valve fully closed, display should read 535-735 mV. With throttle valve fully open, display should read 4500-5500 mV. If sensor parameters are within specification as accelerator pedal is slightly depressed and released, go to step  10 . If operation is not as specified, go to next step.
  9. Test throttle position sensor and sensor circuit. See THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR CIRCUIT  under CIRCUIT TESTS and THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR  under COMPONENT TESTS. Repair as necessary.
  10. Disassemble valve body and inspect. See appropriate OVERHAUL article. Check for loose bolts, damaged "O" rings, valves and valve bodies. Repair or replace as necessary. If symptom is eliminated, diagnosis is complete. If symptom is not eliminated, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
