Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Using scan tool, check PNP switch data values. See SCAN TOOL DATA  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Note scan tool data values, then go to next step.
  2. Test PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. Replace as necessary. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If PNP switch tests okay, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect PNP switch. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and battery feed circuit at PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 8. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check for open in battery feed circuit between ignition switch and PNP switch. Repair as necessary. If circuit is okay, check ignition switch. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Repair as necessary.
  4. Check for poor connection at PNP switch harness connector, 30-pin PCM harness connector, junction block connectors or instrument cluster connectors. See Figure and Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If connections are okay, check condition of wiring between PCM and PNP switch. Repair as necessary. If wiring checks okay and symptom is still present, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
