Removal & Installation: Installation

NOTE: Upper and lower bearing halves are NOT interchangeable.
CAUTION: Main bearings are select fit STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  1. Lubricate upper main bearing halves with engine oil.
    CAUTION: When installing crankshaft, use care not to damage bearing surfaces on the crankshaft.

  2. Install crankshaft. See Figure.
    NOTE: Make sure that the coated and oil groove side of crankshaft thrust washer faces the crankshaft thrust surface.
  3. Push crankshaft forward. Lubricate and install the front thrust washer by rolling the thrust washer onto the machined shelf between the No. 3 upper main bulk head and crankshaft thrust surface.

  4. Move crankshaft rearward. Lubricate and install the rear thrust washer by rolling the thrust washer onto the machined shelf between the No. 3 upper main bulk head and crankshaft thrust surface.
  5. Lubricate lower main bearings with engine oil.
  6. NOTE: Lubricate main bearing cap bolts with engine oil before installation.
  7. Install main bearings and caps. Lubricate main bearing cap bolts with engine oil before installation.
  8. Install the inside main bearing cap bolts and tighten to 20 N.m + 1/4 Turn (15 ft. lbs. + 1/4 Turn). See Figure.
  9. Measure crankshaft end play. See STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  10. Install connecting rods and measure side clearance. See STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  11. Install windage tray. Lubricate bolts with engine oil and tighten to 27 N.m + 1/4 Turn (20 ft. lbs. + 1/4 turn). See Figure.
  12. Install the main cap tie (horizontal) bolts and tighten to 28 N.m (250 INCH lbs). See Figure.
  13. Install rear crankshaft oil seal retainer and oil seal. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .
  14. Install oil pump assembly. See INSTALLATION .
  15. Install crankshaft sprocket. See INSTALLATION .
  16. Install timing chain. See INSTALLATION - CRANKSHAFT SPROCKET  and INSTALLATION - TIMING CHAIN  .
  17. Install timing chain cover (Refer to INSTALLATION .
  18. Install cylinder head covers. See CYLINDER HEAD COVER - LEFT  and CYLINDER HEAD COVER - RIGHT  .
  19. Install idler pulley bracket for accessory drive belt.
  20. Install oil pick-up tube and O-ring.
  21. Install oil pan and oil filter. See INSTALLATION .
  22. Install oil dipstick tube.
  23. Install engine assembly.
  24. Fill engine crankcase with proper oil to correct level. See STANDARD PROCEDURE .
