Removal & Installation: Removal
- Perform fuel pressure release procedure before attempting any repairs.
- Disconnect negative cable from remote jumper terminal.
- Drain cooling system.
- Remove accessory drive belts. COOLING SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS & DRIVE BELT ROUTING
article under ENGINE.
- Remove the vibration damper.
- Remove exhaust cross-under pipe.
- Remove the appropriate catalytic converter.
- Remove upper and lower intake manifolds. See REMOVAL - UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD .REMOVAL - LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD

- Remove cylinder head covers and timing chain cover.
- Remove water outlet connector.

- Rotate crankshaft until crankshaft sprocket timing mark aligns with timing mark on oil pump housing.
- Remove primary timing chain. See REMOVAL - TIMING CHAIN .
- Remove camshaft bearing caps gradually in "REVERSE" sequence of installation.

- Remove camshafts and valve train components from cylinder head. Note component locations for re-installation in original locations.

- Remove cylinder head bolts in reverse sequence of installation starting with bolts 11-9, then bolts 8-1.

- Remove cylinder head(s).
- Remove and discard cylinder head gasket.
- Clean cylinder head and block sealing surfaces. See CLEANING .
