Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
  2. Remove the left valve rocker arm cover insulator from the engine. Valve Rocker Arm Cover Insulator Replacement - Left Side (LT1) , or Valve Rocker Arm Cover Insulator Replacement - Left Side (LT4)

    Remove the transmission vent hose bracket (3) from the transmission. Transmission Vent Hose Clip Bracket Replacement

    Disconnect the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor electrical connector (1) and the fuel injector harness connector (2), if necessary.

  5. Position the electrical wiring harness (3) out of the way.

    Remove the transmission bolts (3, 4).

  7. Install the engine support fixture. Engine Support Fixture (LT1) , or Engine Support Fixture (LT4)
  8. Two-piece propeller shaft - Remove - Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (Coupe with LT1, LT4 and MH3, MJK, MM6) , or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (Convertible with LT1, LT4 and MH3, MJK, MM6) , or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (Coupe with LT1, LT4 and MI2, MI4) , or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (Convertible with LT1, LT4 and MI2, MI4)

    Disconnect the transmission range selector lever cable terminal (1) from the transmission manual shift lever pin.

  10. Remove the transmission range selector lever cable bolt (4).
  11. Slide the retainer (3) forward to release the transmission range selector lever cable (6) from the bracket.
  12. Remove the two cable retainer bolts (7) from the transmission crossmember.
  13. Remove the front cradle shear plate. Front Cradle Shear Plate Replacement
  14. Remove the heated oxygen sensor brackets from the transmission.
  15. Remove the starter. Starter Replacement (LT1, LT4)
  16. Torque Converter Cover- Right Side - Remove - Transmission Converter Cover Replacement (Right Side) , or Transmission Converter Cover Replacement (Left Side) , or Transmission Converter Cover Replacement (LGX)

    Remove the transmission close out plug (1).

  18. Mark the torque converter to flex plate orientation to ensure proper realignment.

    Repeat the following steps for all of the torque converter bolts (1):

    1. Rotate the crankshaft balancer center bolt clockwise ONLY, in order to align the torque converter bolt with the starter opening.
    2. Remove and DISCARD the torque converter bolt.

    Remove the two catalytic converter brace bracket retaining nuts (1) and bolts (2).

  21. Remove the catalytic converter brace bracket (3) from the transmission.
  22. Remove the left side catalytic converter. Catalytic Converter Replacement - Left Side (LT1, LT4)
  23. Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.
  24. Transmission Mount - Remove - Transmission Mount Replacement 
  25. Tilt the transmission downward just enough to gain access to the transmission left and right side fasteners.
  26. Disconnect the electrical wiring harness retainers from the transmission to engine fasteners and from the transmission case.

    Place an oil drain pan under the transmission fluid cooler pipes (1).

  28. Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler inlet and outlet pipes (1) from the transmission, and position aside, or remove from the vehicle as necessary. Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe Replacement (LT4 With MJK or MH3 and KNR, LT1 With MM6, With KNR) , or Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe Replacement (LT1 With M5U, With KNR) , or Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe Replacement (LT1 With M5U, Without KNR) , or Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe Replacement (LT1 With MM6, Without KNR) , or Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe Replacement (LT4 With MGL and KNR, LT1 With MF6 and KNR)
  29. Plug the open fluid ports to prevent fluid loss and contamination.

    Remove the lower transmission bolts (1, 2).

    Remove the transmission bolts (1, 2, 5, 6).

  32. Pull the transmission straight back.
  33. Install the J-21366  Torque Converter Holding Strap onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
  34. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
  35. Transfer components as necessary.
  36. Inspect the transmission fluid cooler, hoses, and pipes for leaks or damage. Replace as necessary.
