Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Remove the DT-21366  Torque Converter Holding Strap from the transmission bell housing.
  2. Install the transmission to the vehicle.

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

    Install the 4 transmission bolts (1) and tighten to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).

    Install the left side engine to transmission bolt (1) and tighten to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).

    Install the 6 lower transmission bolts (1) and tighten to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).

    Vacuum Pump Pipe (2) - Install - Vacuum Pump Pipe Replacement

    Remove the plug in the fluid ports.

  8. Connect the transmission fluid cooler inlet and outlet pipes (2) to the transmission. Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe Replacement (LGX With M13, With 1LE Package) , or Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe Replacement (LGX With M5T, With V03) , or Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe Replacement (LGX With M5T, Without V03)
  9. Remove the oil drain pan under the transmission fluid cooler pipes (2)
  10. Connect the electrical wiring harness retainers to the transmission to engine fasteners and to the transmission case.
  11. Connect Transmission vent hose at transmission.
  12. Transmission Mount - Install - Transmission Mount Replacement 
  13. Remove the transmission jack from under the vehicle.
  14. Align the torque converter to flex plate orientation marks made during the removal procedure.

    NOTE:

    Torque converter bolts are self-locking and must be replaced with NEW torque converter bolts every time the bolts are removed.

    Complete the following steps for all torque converter bolts (1):

    1. Rotate the harmonic balancer center bolt clockwise ONLY, in order to align the torque converter bolt holes in the flex plate with the starter opening in the engine block.
    2. Install all NEW torque converter bolts (1) and tighten to 63 N.m (46 lb ft).

    Install the transmission close out plug (1).

  17. Torque Converter Cover- Right Side - Install - Transmission Vent Hose Clip Bracket Replacement 
  18. Install the starter motor. Starter Replacement (LGX)
  19. Install the left side catalytic converter. Catalytic Converter Replacement - Left Side (LT1, LT4)

    Install the front cradle shear plate (1). Front Cradle Shear Plate Replacement

    Install the catalytic converter brace bracket (3) to the transmission.

  22. Install the two catalytic converter brace bracket retaining nuts (1) and tighten to 22 N.m (16 lb ft).
  23. Install the two catalytic converter brace bracket retaining bolts (2) and tighten to 22 N.m (16 lb ft).
  24. Connect the wiring harness retainers and connectors to the transmission.

    WARNING:

    After installing the transmission range selector shift cable, pull up and push down on ALL connections to verify that the connections are fully seated and properly engaged. Failure to perform this task can result in the vehicle not being able to shift into PARK causing potential vehicle damage and bodily injury.

    Connect the transmission range selector lever cable terminal (1) to the transmission manual shift lever pin.

  26. Install the two cable retainer bolts (6) to the transmission crossmember and tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
  27. Install the cable into the bracket and ensure cable is fully seated.
  28. Slide the retainer (3) forward to lock the transmission range selector lever cable (5) to the bracket.
  29. Install the transmission range selector lever cable retainer bracket bolt (4) and tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
  30. Install the heated oxygen sensor brackets to the transmission.
  31. Adjust the cable. Automatic Transmission Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment 
  32. Install the propeller shaft. Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (Coupe with LGX and M13) , or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (Convertible with LGX and M13) , or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (Coupe with LGX and M5T, MI1) , or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (Convertible with LGX and M5T, MI1)

    Install the 2 transmission bolts (3, 4) and tighten to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).

  34. Lower the vehicle.

    Connect the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor electrical connector (1) and the fuel injector harness connector (2), if necessary.

  36. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection

    Plenum Front Panel (3) - Install - Plenum Front Panel Replacement (LTG LGX)

  38. Check the transmission fluid level and fill if necessary. Transmission Fluid Level and Condition Check
  39. Perform the solenoid valve characterization. Q77 Transmission Control Solenoid Valve Characterization Programming (10L60, 10L80 or 10L90)
  40. NOTE:

    The Transmission Service Fast Learn procedure must be performed when one of the following repairs have been made to the vehicle. Failure to perform the procedure after one of the following repairs may result in poor transmission performance, as well as transmission DTC's being set:

  41. Perform the transmission service fast learn procedure if any of the following repairs has been made to the transmission. Transmission Service Fast Learn Procedure 
    • Pressure regulating solenoid replacement
    • Valve body repair or replacement
    • Any service/repair in response to a shift quality concern
    • Any internal transmission service, repair, overhaul, or replacement
    • Torque converter replacement
    • TCM replacement
    • Transmission assembly replacement
