Camshaft Timing Chain Installation

Special Tools

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .

    NOTE:

    Before installing the camshaft timing chain, check the components of the timing chain system for damage and wear.

  1. Check the components of the timing chain system for damage and wear:
    • Timing chain guides with plastic attachment
    • Timing chain tensioner and timing chain tensioner shoe with plastic attachment
    • Timing chain and all timing chain sprockets
    • Oil pump sprocket
    • Oil pump drive chain tensioner

    Re-cut thread at cylinder head and engine block for the 2 timing chain upper guide bolts (2).

  3. Install the timing chain upper guide (1).
  4. NOTE:

    The tightening procedure of the upper timing chain upper guide bolts should be completed within 10 minutes

  5. Apply thread lock agent to the upper timing chain upper guide bolt (2).
  6. NOTE:

    Do not tighten the upper timing chain upper guide bolt before the camshaft timing chain is installed.

  7. Install the upper timing chain upper guide bolt (2).

    Install the timing chain with the marked chain links as shown and follow the installation sequence:

    1. Install the timing chain in the first step to the fuel injection pump sprocket (2).
    2. Install the timing chain in the second step to the camshaft sprocket (1).
    3. Install the timing chain in the final step to the timing chain idler sprocket (3).

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

    Apply thread lock agent to the lower timing chain upper guide bolt (3).

  10. Install the timing chain upper guide bolt (3) and tighten to 11 N.m (97 lb in).
  11. Tighten the timing chain upper guide bolt (1) to 11 N.m (97 lb in).

    Install the timing chain lower guide (1).

  13. Install the 2 timing chain lower guide bolts (2) and tighten to 10 N.m (89 lb in).

    Install the timing chain tensioner shoe (1).

  15. Install the timing chain tensioner shoe bolt (2) and tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

    Remove the EN-50513  pin (2).

    Remove the EN-51143  fixing tool (1).

    Remove the 2 bolts (3).

  19. Remove the EN-51140  fixing tool (2).

    Install the 4 crankshaft pulley bolts (1).

    Rotate the crankshaft 720 degrees in direction of arrow. Use a pry bar at the 4 crankshaft pulley bolts (1).

  21. Remove the 4 crankshaft pulley bolts (1).
  22. Check the camshaft timing. Refer to Camshaft Timing Chain Inspection .
