Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2018 GMC Yukon XL, 2018 GMC Yukon, 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2018 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2018 Cadillac Escalade ESV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the J-21366  strap from the transmission bell housing which is retaining the torque converter.
  2. Install the engine to the vehicle.
  3. Align and install the engine to the transmission. Raise or lower the transmission as required using a suitable jack.
  4. Working through the left and right side wheelhouse openings, install 2 of the transmission to engine retaining bolts.
  5. Remove the engine lift device and chain.
  6. Remove the floor jack from under the transmission.
  7. CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

  8. Install the ground strap and nut at the left side of the bulkhead. Tighten the nut to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
  9. If equipped, position the engine block heater wire harness to the body and connect the harness retainers.

  11. Connect the vacuum line and the vacuum sensor electrical connector (1) to the vacuum booster.

  13. Install the left upper engine mount bolts (1). Refer to Engine Mount Replacement - Left Side .

  15. Install the right upper engine mount bolts (1). Refer to Engine Mount Replacement - Right Side .
  16. Install the 2 lower bolts securing the transmission to the engine. Refer to Transmission Replacement .
  17. Raise the vehicle.
  18. Support the transmission with an appropriate transmission jack.
  19. Remove the transmission cross member. Refer to Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (2 WD)Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (4 WD) .
  20. Lower the transmission to gain access to the top and sides of the transmission.

  22. Install the remaining bolts securing the transmission to the engine and tighten all. Refer to Transmission Replacement .

  24. Position the fuel line bracket retainer at the left side of the transmission and install the fuel line bracket nut. Tighten the nut to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

  26. position the vent tube bracket and install the retaining nut to the back side of the engine. Tighten the nut to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

  28. Reposition the transmission dip stick tube (2).
  29. Install the transmission dip stick tube retaining nut (1). Tighten the nut to 22 N.m (16 lb ft).
  30. Position the ground cable to the right side of the engine and install the bolt. Tighten the bolt to 22 N.m (16 lb ft).
  31. Lower the vehicle.
  32. Position, route and clip the oxygen sensor wiring harnesses to the bulkhead and frame.
  33. Connect the electrical connector to the bank 2 fuel rail.
  34. Position and attach the transmission wiring harness to the engine.
  35. Raise the vehicle.

  37. Connect the harness retainers and electrical connectors to the transmission assembly.
  38. Install the transmission wiring harness retaining bolt at the right side of the transmission. Tighten the bolt to 10 N.m (89 lb in).

  40. Install the transmission heat shield and heat shield bolts at the right side of the transmission. Tighten the bolt to 17 N.m (13 lb ft).
  41. If equipped with four wheel drive, connect the wire harness electrical connectors and harness retainers at the transfer case.
  42. Raise the transmission.
  43. Connect the oxygen sensor wiring harness at the frame.

  45. Align the torque converter bolt holes to the flex plate bolt holes.
  46. Install the flex plate to torque converter bolts. Refer to Transmission Replacement .

  48. Install the exhaust front pipe (2). Refer to Three-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement .

  50. Install the transmission crossmember (4). Refer to Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (2 WD)Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (4 WD) .

  52. Install the right flywheel inspection cover and bolt. Refer to Transmission Replacement .
  53. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement (L83, L86) .

  55. Install the left flywheel inspection cover and bolt. Refer to Transmission Replacement .
  56. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, install the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Axle Propeller Shaft Replacement (NQH)Front Axle Propeller Shaft Replacement (Heavy Duty) .
  57. Lower the vehicle.
  58. Connect the battery current sensor electrical connector. Refer to Battery Current Sensor Replacement (L83, L86) .

  60. Connect the engine main wiring harness to the engine wiring harness junction block (1). Refer to Underhood Electrical Center or Junction Block Replacement .
  61. Route and connect remaining engine harnesses and connectors.

  63. Install the engine control module (1). Refer to Engine Control Module Replacement .
  64. Remove the engine lift brackets.

  66. Install the fuel injection fuel rail assembly - bank 2 (2). refer to Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Assembly Replacement - Bank 2 .

  68. Install the generator bracket (6) to the engine assembly. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement (L83, L86) .
  69. Install the air conditioning tube bracket bolt (1) to the generator and drive belt tensioner bracket and tighten to 22 N.m (16 lb ft).

  71. Install the heater inlet hose (1). Refer to Heater Inlet Hose Replacement (L83 L86) .
  72. Install the heater outlet hose. Refer to Heater Outlet Hose Replacement (L83 L86) .
  73. Install the headlamp and radiator grille mount panel. Refer to Headlamp and Radiator Grille Mount Panel Replacement .

  75. Install the air conditioning condenser. Refer to Air Conditioning Condenser Replacement (L83 L86) .

  77. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement (L83 L86) .

  79. Install the radiator outlet hose (3). Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement (L83 L86) .

  81. Install the radiator inlet hose (2). Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement (L83 L86) .
  82. NOTE:

    Prelube is necessary if the engine is replaced or overhauled.

  83. If the engine is replaced with a new engine or has been overhauled, perform the Engine Prelubing procedure. Refer to Engine Prelubing .
  84. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Dual Battery)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Single Battery) .
  85. Place the hood in the normal operating position. Refer to Hood Service Positioning .
  86. Fill engine with coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling (Vac N Fill L83 L86)Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill L83 L86)
  87. Fill engine with oil. Refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities , and Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
  88. Run engine and check for leaks.
  89. Perform the crank variation learn procedure. Refer to Crankshaft Position Variation Learn
