Installation Procedure

  1. Install a NEW wheel drive shaft retaining ring (2) to the wheel drive shaft constant velocity inner joint.

  2. Install a NEW wheel drive shaft washer (1) to the wheel drive shaft constant velocity outer joint.
  3. Position the DT-6332  seal protector (1) in the transaxle.

  4. Install the wheel drive shaft until the wheel drive shaft splines are past the axle seal.
  5. Remove the DT-6332  seal protector (1) from the wheel drive shaft.
  6. Install the wheel drive shaft until it is fully seated in the transaxle.
  7. With the wheel drive shaft installed, grasp the inner tripod housing and pull the tripod outward to ensure that the wheel drive shaft is properly engaged. The wheel drive shaft will remain in place if properly installed.
    NOTE: In the following step, DO NOT pull on the wheel drive shaft. Pull only on the inner joint
  8. Install the wheel drive shaft to the front wheel hub/bearing.
  9. Connect the control arm ball joint to the steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement .
  10. Connect the outer tie rod assembly to the steering knuckle. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement .
  11. Hand tighten the NEW wheel drive shaft nut (1) on the wheel drive shaft (1).

  12. Install the DT-50186  wheel hub holding tool (1) to the wheel hub with the wheel nuts and support the DT-50186  wheel hub holding tool outer end on a safety stand.

  13. Using a torque wrench and the appropriate size socket, install the wheel drive shaft nut and tighten to 50 N.m (37 lb ft) + 60 degrees.
    CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution .
  14. Remove the DT-50186  wheel hub holding tool (1) from the wheel hub.
  15. Using the appropriate tools (punch and hammer), stake the wheel drive shaft nut collar into the slot on the wheel drive shaft.

    Stake the center of the wheel drive shaft nut and ensure it is fully staked. Each side of the stake should be in contact with the slot in the wheel drive shaft. The gap between the bottom of the stake in the wheel drive shaft nut and the bottom of the slot in the wheel drive shaft should be less than 1 mm (0.039 in).

  16. Install the front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  17. Fill the transmission to the proper level with NEW transmission fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Drain and Fill (Maintenance)Transmission Fluid Drain and Fill (Repair) , for automatic transmission and Transmission Fluid Drain and Fill for manual transmission.
  18. Lower the vehicle.
