Installation Procedure
- NOTE:
A NEW steering knuckle may NOT come with the steering knuckle king pin bushing and pin installed. If NOT, the knuckle, bushing and pin must be assembled by the technician.
Position the NEW steering knuckle king pin bushing (1) in the steering knuckle. Ensure the bushing is oriented correctly.
- Install the correct EN-46109 guide pin (2) in the steering knuckle king pin bolt hole.
- The EN-46109 guide pin has some play in it. An open end wrench can be used on the steering knuckle king pin to ensure the king pin remains centered over the guide pin.
- Ensure the EN-46109 guide pin can be turned freely while pressing in the steering knuckle king pin. If the king pin makes contact with the guide pin, use the open end wrench to turn it slightly to regain the necessary clearance.
- Install the steering knuckle king pin (3) over the guide pin and into the steering knuckle king pin bushing (1). Ensure the king pin bolt hole is centered on the guide pin and lightly tap the king pin with a hammer to drive it through the king pin bushing until it starts to enter the steering knuckle bore.
- NOTE:
- The intent of the CH-51692 knuckle support and CH-51692 - 10 support bar is to hold the steering knuckle in position in the hydraulic press so the king pin remains exactly vertical during installation.
- The CH-51692 - 10 support bar is also equipped with several cutouts to accommodate all versions of HiPer Strut steering knuckles.
- A suitable piece of steel bar stock measuring 25 mm (1 in) x 51 mm (2 in), and long enough to straddle the hydraulic press, can be used in place of the CH-51692 - 10 support bar.
Place the steering knuckle (1) along with the CH-51692 knuckle support (2), CH-51692 - 10 support bar (3) onto a hydraulic press with the steering knuckle king pin axis exactly vertical with the hydraulic press piston. The CH-51692 - 10 support bar should be positioned with its hanging hole (4) positioned to the outside of the steering knuckle where the front wheel bearing and hub assembly mounts.
Continue to press the steering knuckle king pin until the king pin is fully seated. The EN-46109 guide pin should be able to move freely at all times during the pressing to ensure proper alignment of the king pin with the king pin bolt hole.
- Once the steering knuckle king pin is fully seated, remove the steering knuckle from the hydraulic press and remove all of the special tools.
Install the steering knuckle king pin bolt (1) and tighten to 7 N.m (62 lb in).
- NOTE:
Ensure the steering knuckle upper ball stud is properly aligned in the steering knuckle.
Position the steering knuckle (1) in the front suspension strut yoke.
- Connect the steering knuckle upper ball stud to the steering knuckle. Steering Knuckle Upper Ball Stud Replacement
- CAUTION:
Refer to Fastener Caution .
CAUTION:This vehicle is equipped with torque-to-yield or single use fasteners. Install a NEW torque-to-yield or single use fastener when installing this component. Failure to replace the torque-to-yield or single use fastener could cause damage to the vehicle or component.
NOTE:The NEW steering knuckle king pin bushing nuts should be tightened in small increments to ensure the steering knuckle king pin bushing bolts are drawn into the front suspension strut yoke correctly.
Tighten the nut (1) in a first pass to 45 N.m (33 lb ft) using the CH-49375 wrench (2).
- Using the EN-45059 angle meter and the CH-49375 wrench, tighten the steering knuckle nut (1) a final pass to an additional 45 - 60 degrees.
