C4 Clutch Component Inspections

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, 2003 Chevrolet Cab & Chassis Silverado, and 2002 GMC Sierra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Measure thickness of each C4 clutch friction plate (dimension "A") in at least 3 locations. See Figure and Fig 2 . Compare measurement to specifications. See MAIN HOUSING MODULE SPECIFICATIONS  table under TRANSMISSION SPECIFICATIONS. If friction plate is less than minimum thickness at any point, replace friction plate.
  2. Measure oil groove depth of each C4 friction plate (dimension "B") in at least 3 locations. See Figure. Compare measurement to specifications. See MAIN HOUSING MODULE SPECIFICATIONS  table under TRANSMISSION SPECIFICATIONS. If oil groove depth is less than minimum specification at any point, replace friction plate.
  3. Place friction plate on a level surface and measure cone of each plate (dimension "C") in at least 3 locations. See Figure. Compare measurement to specifications. See MAIN HOUSING MODULE SPECIFICATIONS  table under TRANSMISSION SPECIFICATIONS. If cone is more than specified at any location, replace friction plate.
  4. Measure thickness of each C4 clutch reaction plate (dimension "A") in at least 3 locations. See Figure and Fig 2 . Compare measurement to specifications. See MAIN HOUSING MODULE SPECIFICATIONS  table under TRANSMISSION SPECIFICATIONS. If reaction plate is less than minimum thickness at any point, replace reaction plate.
  5. Place reaction plate on a level surface and measure cone of each plate (dimension "A") in at least 3 locations. See Figure. Compare measurement to specifications. See MAIN HOUSING MODULE SPECIFICATIONS  table under TRANSMISSION SPECIFICATIONS. If cone is more than specified at any location, replace reaction plate.
  6. Measure thickness of each C4 spring plate (dimension "A") in at least 3 locations. See Figure and Fig 2 . Compare measurement to specifications. See MAIN HOUSING MODULE SPECIFICATIONS  table under TRANSMISSION SPECIFICATIONS. If spring plate is less than minimum thickness at any point, replace spring plate.
  7. Place spring plate on a level surface and measure cone of each plate (dimension "A") in at least 3 locations. See Figure. Compare measurement to specifications. See MAIN HOUSING MODULE SPECIFICATIONS  table under TRANSMISSION SPECIFICATIONS. If cone is more than specified at any location, replace spring plate.
  8. Measure thickness of C4 clutch backplate (dimension "A") in at least 3 locations. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . Compare measurement to specifications. See MAIN HOUSING MODULE SPECIFICATIONS  table under TRANSMISSION SPECIFICATIONS. If backplate is less than minimum thickness at any point, replace backplate.
  9. Place backplate on a level surface and measure the cone of backplate in at least 3 locations. Compare measurement to specifications. See MAIN HOUSING MODULE SPECIFICATIONS  table under TRANSMISSION SPECIFICATIONS. If cone is more than specified at any location, replace backplate.
