Test Description

The number below refers to the step number on the diagnostic table.

  1. 4:  This step determines if the TCM or the TFT, sensor is causing a steady, unchanging TFT, reading.

- Go to Step 3  Go to Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. IMPORTANT:
    • Before clearing the DTC, use the scan tool in order to record the ECM and the TCM Failure Records. Using the Clear Eng./Trans. DTC Info function erases the Failure Records from the ECM and TCM.
    • Using the Clear Eng./Trans. DTC Info function erases stored DTCs in both the ECM and TCM.
  4. Record the DTC Failure Records.
  5. Clear the DTC.
  6. Select Trans. Fluid Temp. on the scan tool.
  7. Drive the vehicle and observe the scan tool for the following condition:

    The Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) sensor does not change greater than 5°C (9°F) in 15 minutes since startup.

Did the condition occur?
- Go to Step 4  Go to INTERMITTENTS
  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the AT inline 14-way connector.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Did the scan tool display a condition in which the Trans. Fluid Temp. does not change by greater than the specified value in 15 minutes since startup?
5°C (9°F) Go to Step 6  Go to Step 5 
5 Replace the automatic transmission wiring harness. Refer to Wiring Harness Removal .
Did you complete the replacement?
- Go to Step 7  -
6 Replace the TCM. Refer to Transmission Control Module (TCM) Replacement .
Did you complete the replacement?
- Go to Step 7  -
7 Perform the following procedure in order to verify the repair:
  1. Select DTC.
  2. Select Clear Info.
  3. Drive the vehicle and ensure the following conditions are met:
    • The TFT is -39°C to +149°C (-38°F to +300°F).
    • The TFT changes by greater than 5°C (9°F) since startup.
  4. Select Specific DTC.
  5. Enter DTC P0711.

Does the DTC reset?
- Go to Step 2  Go to Step 8 
8 With the scan tool, observe the stored information, capture info and DTC info.
Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed?
- Go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS System OK
