Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform powertrain diagnostic system check. See POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing powertrain diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. NOTE: If DTC P0335 is also set, diagnose DTC P0335 before proceeding with this DTC. See DTC P0335: CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR CIRCUIT .
  3. Install scan tool. Start engine and idle for 2 minutes. If scan tool indicates that DTC P0336 failed this ignition cycle, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate that DTC P0336 failed this ignition cycle, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  4. Visually and physically inspect all circuits going to CKP sensor for the following:
    • Routed to close to secondary ignition wires or components.
    • Routed to close to after-market add-on electrical equipment.
    • Routed to close to solenoids, relays, and motors.

    If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  9. If problem was not found, go to next step.

  5. Check CKP sensor connector for poor connections. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  9. If problem was not found, go to next step.
  6. Check PCM connectors for poor connections. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  9. If problem was not found, go to next step.
  7. Remove CKP sensor. Inspect CKP sensor for signs of damage. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  9. If problem was not found, go to next step.
  8. Inspect CKP reluctor wheel for damage. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  9. If problem was not found, go to next step.
  9. Replace CKP sensor. After repairs, go to next step.
  10. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within code enable criteria. If DTC runs and passes, go to next step. If DTC does not run and pass, go to step  2.
  11. Using scan tool, observe stored information. If scan tool displays any DTCs that have not been diagnosed, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If scan tool does not display any DTCs, system is okay.
