Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform powertrain diagnostic system check. See POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing powertrain diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. If the engine starts and continues to run, go to next step. If the engine does not start and continue to run, go to step  4.
  3. Observe FREEZE FRAME/FAILURE RECORDS data for this DTC. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within code enable criteria or as close to FREEZE FRAME/FAILURE RECORDS data as possible. If DTC failed this ignition cycle, go to next step. If DTC did not fail this ignition cycle, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  4. Turn ignition on, engine off. Disconnect Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . Using DVOM, measure voltage between CKP connector terminal "A" (Light Green wire) and ground. See Figure. If DVOM displays battery voltage, go to next step. If DVOM does not display battery voltage, go to step  8.
  5. Using DVOM, measure voltage between CKP sensor connector terminals "A" (Light Green wire) and "B" (Yellow/Black wire). If DVOM displays battery voltage, go to next step. If DVOM does not display battery voltage, go to step  9.
  6. Momentarily connect a test light between CKP sensor connector terminals "A" (Light Green wire) and "C" (Yellow wire). If fuel pump operates, go to step  11. If fuel pump does not operate, go to next step.
  7. NOTE: Use Connector Test Adapter Kit (J 35616-A) when probing PCM connectors.
  8. Reconnect CKP sensor. Disconnect PCM Blue connector C1. Connect a fused jumper wire between PCM Blue connector C1 terminal No. 2 (Light Green wire) and battery voltage. See Figure. Connect a jumper wire between PCM Blue connector C1 terminal No. 21 (Yellow/Black wire) and ground. Using DVOM connected to ground, probe PCM Blue connector C1 terminal No. 12 (Yellow wire). Crank engine. If DVOM indicates 4-6 volts, go to step  15. If DVOM does not indicate 4-6 volts, go to step  10.
  9. Check Light Green wire between CKP sensor and PCM for open or short to ground. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If problem was not found, go to step  15.
  10. Check Yellow/Black wire between CKP sensor and PCM for open or poor connections. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If problem was not found, go to step  15.
  11. Check Yellow wire between CKP sensor and PCM for open, short to ground and short to voltage. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If problem was not found, go to next step.
  12. NOTE: CKP system variation learn procedure must be performed anytime relationship between CKP sensor and CKP reluctor wheel is changed. See CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR  under PROGRAMMING.
  13. Remove CKP sensor. Visually inspect CKP sensor for physical damage, loose or improper installation, and wiring routed too closely to secondary ignition components. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If problem was not found. go to next step.
  14. Visually inspect CKP sensor reluctor wheel for damage. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If problem was not found. go to next step.
  15. Check CKP sensor connector for poor connections. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If problem was not found, go to next step.
  16. Replace CKP sensor. Perform CKP system variation learn procedure. See CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR  under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to step  16.
  17. Replace PCM. Program PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to next step.
  18. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within code enable criteria. If DTC runs and passes, go to next step. If DTC does not run and pass, go to step  2.
  19. Using scan tool, observe stored information. If scan tool displays any DTCs that have not been diagnosed, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If scan tool does not display any DTCs, system is okay.
