Test Aa: Turn Signal Lights/Indicators Always On Or Flashing

  1. Check operation of exterior lights. If exterior lights are operating properly, go to next step. If exterior lights are not operating properly, repair exterior light system as necessary. See appropriate EXTERIOR LIGHTS article.
  2. Cover ambient light sensor. Ambient light sensor is located in center of instrument panel upper trim pad, near windshield defroster vent. Turn ignition switch to RUN position, with engine OFF. Observe turn signal lights and indicators. Place turn signal switch in OFF position. If turn signal lights and/or indicators do not turn off, go to next step. If turn signal lights and indicators turn off, check for an intermittent or poor connections in related circuits. See DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS  .
  3. If no turn signal lights are flashing, go to next step. If any turn signal lights are flashing, to step  11 .
    4. NOTE: Turn signal indicator will illuminate if same side rear turn signal bulb is inoperative and park lights are on.
  4. If both turn signal lights and turn signal indicator are illuminated, go to next step. If only turn signal indicator is illuminated, perform TEST AB: TURN SIGNAL LIGHTS/INDICATORS INOPERATIVE  .
  5. If front turn signals are always on, go to next step. If front turn signals are not always on, go to step  10 .
  6. If automatic headlights are illuminated, go to next step. If automatic headlights are not illuminated, repair automatic headlight system as necessary. See appropriate HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS & DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS article.
  7. Disconnect Daytime Running Lights (DRL) control module harness connector. DRL control module is located behind instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . If front turn signals are not illuminated, go to next step. If front turn signals are illuminated, go to step  9 .
  8. Test suspect turn signal switch signal circuit between DRL control module and turn signal for a short to voltage. See appropriate HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS & DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS article. If no problem is found, go to step  12 . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  13 .
  9. Repair short to voltage in suspect turn signal switch voltage supply circuit between DRL control module and turn signal. See appropriate HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS & DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS article. After repair, go to step  13 .
  10. Repair short to voltage in suspect turn signal switch signal circuit between DRL control module and turn signal. See appropriate HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS & DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS article. After repair, go to step  13 .
    11. NOTE: Turn signal switch and hazard switch are integral part of multifunction switch.
  11. Replace multifunction switch. See MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step  13 .
  12. Replace DRL control module. See DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  13. Operate system to verify repair. If system does not operate properly, go to step  2 . If system operates properly, system is okay.
