Test F: Compressor Clutch Does Not Engage

NOTE:
Definition: The A/C compressor clutch will not engage when an A/C request has been made and a Powertrain DTC has not been set.
- If diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Connect scan tool to DLC. Start engine. Using scan tool, observe engine COOLANT TEMPERATURE in the Powertrain Data list. If scan tool indicates COOLANT TEMPERATURE parameter is above 250°F (121°C) on 3.8L models, or 257°F (125°C) on 5.7L models, check engine for overheating condition and repair as necessary. If scan tool indicates COOLANT TEMPERATURE parameter below 250°F (121°C) on 3.8L models, or 257°F (125°C) on 5.7L models, go to next step.
- Ensure ambient air temperature is above 38°F (3°C). Start engine. Place blower switch in maximum speed position. Place A/C switch in the ON position. Place air temperature switch in the coldest position. If A/C compressor operates, problem is intermittent. Check for faulty wiring, poor connections or damaged components, and repair as necessary. If A/C compressor does not operate, go to next step.
- Park vehicle inside, or in the shade out of direct sunlight. Open windows to ventilate vehicle interior. Turn ignition off. If A/C system was operating, allow system pressure to equalize for approximately 2 minutes. Connect A/C manifold gauge set to system. Record ambient air temperature. Record high and low side static pressures. Compare pressure values with the specifications for the ambient air temperature. See Figure. If pressure values are within the specifications for the ambient air temperature, and within 15 psi of each other, go to next step. If pressure values are not within the specifications for the ambient air temperature, and are not within 15 psi of each other, go to LEAK TESTING in GENERAL SERVICING PROCEDURES article in GENERAL SERVICING.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe A/C HIGH SIDE pressure parameter in POWERTRAIN DATA list. Compare A/C HIGH SIDE pressure on scan tool to high side pressure values. See A/C SYSTEM PERFORMANCE TEST under SYSTEM TESTS. If high side pressure values are within 15 psi of each other, go to next step. If high side pressure values are not within 15 psi of each other, go to step 17.
- If HVAC control assembly is inoperative, go to step 16. If HVAC control assembly is operative, go to next step.
- Start engine. Using scan tool, observe A/C REQUEST SIGNAL parameter in POWERTRAIN DATA list. Place air temperature switch in the coldest position. Place blower switch in any speed position. Place A/C request switch in ON position. If scan tool indicates A/C REQUEST SIGNAL is YES, go to step 10. If A/C REQUEST SIGNAL is not YES, go to next step.
- If A/C request indicator light illuminates, go to next step. If A/C request indicator light does not illuminate, go to step 28.
- Turn ignition off. Check A/C request signal circuit (Dark Green/White wire) for a short to ground, high resistance or an open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If a circuit condition was found, repair as necessary and go to step 35. If circuit is okay, go to step 29.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, command A/C compressor relay ON and OFF. If compressor relay turns ON and OFF with each command, go to step 14. If compressor relay does not turn on and off with each command, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect compressor relay. Turn ignition on. Using a test light connected to ground, probe terminal No. D10 (Pink wire) of relay connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 23.
- Connect a test light between relay connector terminal No. D10 (Pink wire) and terminal No. C10 (Dark Green wire) on 3.8L models or terminal No. C8 (Dark Green wire) on 5.7L models. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Using scan tool, command compressor relay on and off. If test light turns on and off with each command, go to step 24. If test light does not turn on and off with each command, go to next step.
- If test light remains illuminated with each command, go to step 20. If test light does not remain illuminated with each command, go to step 19.
- Ensure ignition is on. Using a test light connected to ground, probe relay connector terminal No. D10 (Pink wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 24.
- Turn ignition off. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between relay connector terminal No. D10 (Pink wire) and terminal No. C8 (Dark Green/White wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Turn ignition on. If compressor clutch engages, go to step 26. If compressor clutch does not engage, go to step 21.
- Check voltage supply circuit (Brown wire) to HVAC control assembly for a short to ground, high resistance, or an open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If a condition in the voltage supply circuit was found, repair as necessary and go to step 35. If a circuit condition was not found, go to step 18.
- Check A/C pressure sensor ground circuit (Red/Black wire) for an open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If an open was found, repair as necessary and go to step 35. If an open was not found, go to step 25.
- Check HVAC control ground circuit for an open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If an open was found, repair as necessary and go to step 35. If an open was not found, go to step 28.
- Check compressor relay control circuit (Dark Green/White wire) for an open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If an open was found, repair as necessary and go to step 35. If an open was not found, go to step 29.
- Check compressor relay control circuit (Dark Green/White wire) for a short to ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If a short to ground was found, repair as necessary and go to step 35. If a short to ground was not found, go to step 29.
- Check compressor clutch supply voltage circuit (Dark Green wire) for a short to ground, high resistance or an open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If a circuit condition was found, repair as necessary and go to step 35. If a circuit condition was not found, go to next step.
- Check compressor clutch ground circuit (Black wire) for high resistance and an open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If high resistance or an open was found, go to step 35. If high resistance or an open was not found, go to step 27.
- Repair compressor relay ignition voltage supply circuit (Pink wire) between underhood fuse block and relay terminal No. D8. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If repair is complete, go to step 35.
- Repair compressor relay ignition voltage supply circuit (Pink wire) between underhood fuse block and relay terminal No. D10. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If repair is complete, go to step 35.
- Check refrigerant pressure sensor connector for a poor connection. If a poor connection was found, repair as necessary and go to step 35. If a poor connection was not found, go to step 30.
- Check compressor relay connector for a poor connection. If a poor connection was found, repair as necessary and go to step 35. If a poor connection was not found, go to step 31.
- Check compressor clutch connector for a poor connection. If a poor connection was found, repair as necessary and go to step 34. If a poor connection was not found, go to step 32.
- Check HVAC control assembly connectors for poor connections. If a poor connection was found, repair as necessary and go to step 35. If a poor connection was not found, go to step 33.
- Check PCM connectors for poor connections. If a poor connection was found, repair as necessary and go to step 35. If a poor connection was not found, go to step 34.
- Replace refrigerant pressure sensor. See REFRIGERANT PRESSURE SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are complete, go to step 35.
- Replace compressor clutch relay. See COMPRESSOR RELAY under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are complete, go to step 35.
- Replace compressor clutch. See COMPRESSOR SERVICING article in GENERAL SERVICING. After repairs are complete, go to step 35.
- Replace HVAC control assembly. See HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are complete, go to step 35.
- Replace PCM and recalibrate. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - CAMARO & FIREBIRD article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If replacement is complete, go to next step.
- Operate system to verify repair. If the problem was corrected, system is okay. If the problem was not corrected, go to step 4.
