Instrument Cluster Diagnostic System Check

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, repair fault with class 2 data communications network. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - MONTANA, SILHOUETTE & VENTURE article.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Attempt to establish communications with Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If scan tool can communicate with IPC and PCM, go to next step. If scan tool can not communicate with IPC or PCM, diagnose concern with module communications network. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - MONTANA, SILHOUETTE & VENTURE article.
  3. Using scan tool, display all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) present for IPC and PCM. If displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any DTCs, diagnose concerns by symptoms present. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. For any DTC present that begin with a "U", repair fault with module communications network before proceeding with any other diagnostic procedure. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - MONTANA, SILHOUETTE & VENTURE article. If any PCM DTCs are present, go to appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. For any IPC DTCs are present, go to appropriate test procedure under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS for DTC present. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) DTC INDEX  table.
