Test L: Low Engine Oil Level Indicator Always On

  1. If vehicle has been checked for DTCs, go to next step. If vehicle has not been checked for DTCs, check for DTCs. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  2. Check operation of fuel gauge. If fuel gauge operates properly, go to next step. If fuel gauge does not operate properly, diagnose fuel gauge. See TEST B: FUEL GAUGE INOPERATIVE/INACCURATE  .
  3. Disconnect engine oil level sensor harness connector. Engine oil pressure switch is located on front of engine, above starter. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using a fused jumper wire (3-amp), connect ground to engine oil level sensor harness connector terminal "A" (Brown wire). If low oil level indicator illuminates, go to next step. If engine oil level indicator does not illuminate, go to step  7 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect PCM 80-pin harness connector C2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If engine oil level indicator illuminates, go to next step. If engine oil level indicator does not illuminate, go to step  6 .
  5. Measure resistance between ground and PCM harness connector terminal No. 6 (Brown/White wire). If resistance is less than 2 ohms, repair short to ground in Brown/White wire between PCM and instrument cluster. If resistance is 2 ohms or more and concern still exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If concern still exists, go to next step.
  6. Measure resistance in Brown wire between engine oil level sensor harness connector terminal "A" and PCM harness connector terminal No. 58. If resistance is 2 ohms or more, repair open in Brown wire between PCM and engine oil level sensor. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Reprogram PCM. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. Recheck system operation.
  7. Using a fused jumper wire (3-amp), connect engine oil level sensor harness connector terminals "A" (Brown wire) and "B" (Black wire). If engine oil level indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If engine oil level indicator illuminates, go to step  9 .
  8. Check for poor connection at engine oil level sensor harness connector. If engine oil level sensor harness connector is okay, replace engine oil level sensor. After repairs, perform instrument cluster system check. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  9. Repair open in Black wire between engine oil level sensor and ground. Ground point is located on transmission stud, near starter. After repairs, perform instrument cluster system check. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
