Steering Wheel Airbag Coil Replacement (Chevrolet/GMC)

CAUTION: With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:
  • The steering column
  • The intermediate shaft(s)
  • The steering gear

After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil's centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.

Preliminary Procedures

  1. Remove Steering Wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement (Chevrolet/GMC)
  2. Remove Steering Column Shroud. Refer to Steering Column Shroud Replacement (RPO N37)Steering Column Shroud Replacement (RPO N38)Steering Column Shroud Replacement (RPO N33)
  3. Remove Instrument Panel Knee Bolster. Refer to Instrument Panel Knee Bolster Replacement (Chevrolet/GMC)
  4. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
1 Steering Wheel Airbag Coil Retaining Ring
CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution .

Procedure

  1. With the front wheels of the vehicle in the straight ahead position, use the CH-42640  anti-rotation pin to lock the steering column.

    The ignition and start switch should be in the OFF-LOCK position.

  2. Remove the steering wheel airbag coil retaining ring.

    DISCARD the retaining ring.

  3. Install a NEW steering wheel airbag coil retaining ring.

2 Steering Wheel Airbag Coil

Procedure

  1. Ensure the steering wheel airbag coil wave washer is in place.
  2. Ensure the steering wheel airbag coil is CENTERED during installation. Refer to Airbag Steering Wheel Module Coil Centering 
  3. Align the steering wheel airbag coil with the turn signal switch cancel cam and seat the coil firmly.
NOTE:
  • After removing the steering wheel airbag coil, secure the steering wheel airbag coil wave washer until installation of the coil. Do NOT leave the washer off during installation of the coil.
  • Do NOT remove the centering tab from the steering wheel airbag coil until the installation is complete. If the centering tab is missing then re-center the assembly using the appropriate centering procedure.
