Removal Procedure

- Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement (L96) .
- Remove the generator and power steering pump bracket. Refer to Generator and Power Steering Pump Bracket Replacement (L96) .
- Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
- Remove the coolant air bleed pipe. Refer to Engine Coolant Air Bleed Pipe Replacement (L96) .
- Remove the left exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Left Side (L96) .
- Remove the pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
- Remove the engine ground strap bolt from the cowl at the rear of the cylinder head.
- Remove the ground strap from the cowl.
- Remove and discard the cylinder head bolts (1, 2).
- Remove the cylinder head (3).
- Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket (1).
- If required, clean and inspect the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection .
NOTE:
The cylinder head bolts are of a torque-to-yield design and are NOT to be reused.
CAUTION:
After removal, place the cylinder head on 2 wood blocks in order to prevent damage to the sealing surfaces.
