Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2018 Chevrolet Suburban 3500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement (L96) .
  2. Remove the generator and power steering pump bracket. Refer to Generator and Power Steering Pump Bracket Replacement (L96) .
  3. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  4. Remove the coolant air bleed pipe. Refer to Engine Coolant Air Bleed Pipe Replacement (L96) .
  5. Remove the left exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Left Side (L96) .
  6. Remove the pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  7. Remove the engine ground strap bolt from the cowl at the rear of the cylinder head.
  8. Remove the ground strap from the cowl.

    NOTE:

    The cylinder head bolts are of a torque-to-yield design and are NOT to be reused.

  10. Remove and discard the cylinder head bolts (1, 2).
  11. CAUTION:

    After removal, place the cylinder head on 2 wood blocks in order to prevent damage to the sealing surfaces.

  12. Remove the cylinder head (3).

  14. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket (1).
  15. If required, clean and inspect the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection .
