Installing rear axle differential
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2023 BMW M5, 2022 BMW M5, 2021 BMW M5, 2020 BMW M5, and 2019 BMW M5. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Perform the steps on the right and left side.
- Fold open the assembly protection ring (1).
- Position the rear axle differential (1) below the rear axle support using the universal jack and the special tool 0 495 827 (23 4 150) .
- Insert the right output shaft (3) in the rear axle differential (1).
- Turn the rear axle differential (1) in arrow direction slightly to the left and insert the left output shaft (2) in the rear axle differential while doing so.
NOTE:
Perform the steps on the right and left side.
- Pull on the tab of the installation protection ring (1) until one of the two predetermined breaking points breaks.
- Pull out and dispose of the installation protection ring (1).
- Lift up the rear axle differential (1) and position on the rear axle support using the universal jack and the
special tool 0 495 827 (23 4 150) .
Make sure that the special tool 0 496 080 (33 5 206) is not pinched between the rear axle differential and the dust plate of an output shaft.
- Replace screws (1).
Parts: Screws
- Screw in the screws (1) using hand force and tighten.

- Replace the screw (1).

- Insert the screw (1).
- Replace nut (1).

- Tighten nut (1).
TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

- Loosen and remove the special tool 0 496 080 (33 5 206) from the rear axle differential (1) .
- Lower universal jack using special tool 0 495 827 (23 4 150) and put away .
- Position the ground strap (2).
- Tighten nut (1).
TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

- Secure the cables on the holders (3).
- Connect connectors (1) and (2) and lock.
